Day 1 of Glorious Goodwood 2025 promises exhilarating horse racing with highly anticipated races like the Chesterfield Cup Handicap and the Vintage Stakes. Defiance, expected to leverage a favorable draw, aims for victory in the Chesterfield Cup. Andab seeks redemption in the Vintage Stakes while Lake Forest looks to overcome its prior defeats in the Lennox Stakes. Military Academy could surprise in the Goodwood Cup, contingent on weather conditions. In the Shaker Handicap, Jakajaro stands a good chance given its skills displayed in previous races.

Glorious Goodwood 2025 - Day 1 Preview

Race 1 - Chesterfield Cup Handicap Tips

10. DEFIANCE has landed what could turn out to be a kind draw out in stall 17 and Roger Varian's four-year-old warrants his position near the head of the market.

Defiance was highly-tried during the first half of his three-year-old campaign, finishing a close second to Bellum Justum in the Blue Ribband Trial at Epsom before disappointing showings at Epsom and Royal Ascot.

Silvestre De Sousa held his mount up out the back as he made his return from a year-long lay-off on Epsom Derby day, where Defiance kept on well to finish fourth behind impressive winner, Ecureuil Secret.

Varian's four-year-old is entitled to have improved plenty for that return to action and Defiance remains on the same mark.

He's got a strong chance in what looks to be a very winnable race.

Race 2 - Vintage Stakes Tips

With Joseph O'Brien's horses currently in fantastic form, I'm going to roll the dice again with 2. ANDAB.

I backed O'Brien's raider in both the Marble Hill Stakes and the Coventry and while he was beaten on both occasions, Andab's performances can be commended.

O'Brien's star met with a setback following his impressive debut win and still wasn't beaten far behind Albert Einstein at the Curragh.

Andab was then heavily backed going into the Coventry, but was given far too much work to do by Dylan Browne McMonagle and could only stay on to finish fourth.

This full sibling to former Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Victoria Road is bred to be much more effective over seven furlongs and a mile.

8/1 is a solid each-way price.

Race 3 - Lennox Stakes Tips

Three-year-olds have a fairly poor record in the Lennox Stakes, so I'm going to take Jonquil on with 5. LAKE FOREST, who is yet to recreate his Australian form since returning to Europe.

William Haggas' star claimed a hugely lucrative victory in the Golden Eagle on his Australian debut in November, beating future Royal Ascot winner Lazzat by half-a-length.

Since then, Lake Forest has been well-beaten in French Group 3, placed fifth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, and suffered a six-length defeat when dropped back to Group 3 company in the Criterion Stakes.

Tom Marquand's mount barely made any progress from the rear that day as Quinault made all to win, however, I fancy the track at Goodwood will suit Lake Forest better than Ascot or York did.

A more positive ride behind what's sure to be a rapid pace could see Haggas' four-year-old return to top form.

Race 4 - Goodwood Cup Tips

Trueshan's participation will likely depend on ground conditions (going is currently good), but there is some rain in the air over the next 24 hours, so it could be soft enough for Alan King's star to take his chance.

If all of the runners stand their ground, there will be three paid places to play for on Tuesday and I'm going to chance my arm with 4. MILITARY ACADEMY.

John and Thady Gosden's four-year-old has only run on seven occasions, winning three of his first four starts.

Military Academy was beaten into second by Royal Champion - winner of the York Stakes on Saturday - on his seasonal reappearance, before struggling on fast ground out in Bahrain in March.

The Gosden's four-year-old ran a lovely race on his return to action here at Goodwood in June, losing out narrowly to the classy Hamish in the Listed Tapster Stakes.

Two miles is a complete unknown, but Fastnet Rock has produced plenty of good stayers and Military Academy won't have to improve much to challenge the leading contenders on Tuesday.

Race 5 - Shaker Handicap Tips

A typically competitive handicap sprint, where I fancy the chances of 6. JAKAJARO.

Robert Cowell's recruit reached a rating of 105 for David Marnane in Ireland, but took his chance at Ascot earlier this month off a rating of 96, following defeats at Meydan, Windsor and Newcastle.

Jamie Spencer utilised his typical waiting tactics on the straight track at Ascot and Jakajaro was flying home with a wet sail, but ran into a wall of runners ahead of him and was eased thereafter.

Cowell's charge would sure have won, or gone very close had his path to the post not been blocked, while the handicapper has opted not to increase his rating following that sixth-place finish.
