Major races of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival
The major race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is the Group One Stradbroke Handicap, which is the only race in Queensland that has prizemoney in seven figures ($1.5 million).
The Doomben 10,000 is the other major sprint of the carnival, with the JJ Atkins (1600m) the premier mile event of the winter.
Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival History
In the months of May and June, Doomben and Eagle Farm racecourses come alive for five days of thoroughbred action in the state of Queensland.
The highlight of the carnival is the Group One Stradbroke Handicap, which was first run and won back in 1890 with Pyrrhus taking out the prize. Since that running the festival has grown in stature every year, culiminating in the 2019 edition of the Stradbroke being run for $1.5 million.
Today the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival is Australia's top colder month festivals and a must-watch for thoroughbred enthusiasts.
