First run in 1972, The Galaxy is a sprint feature serves as the major lead-up to the Group One T J Smith Stakes during the Championships.

The Galaxy was also ran at Randwick for the majority of the race's history before it was relocated to its current home at Rosehill in 2013 and now sits as one of the drawcards of Golden Slipper Day.

The Galaxy was a Listed race in 1979, before being upgraded to Group two status in 1980, and finally gaining Group One status in 1984.
