The George Ryder Stakes dates all the way back to 1903 and was given group one status in 1980 which was taken out by the champion Manikato.

Run over the 1500 metres at Rosehill Gardens, this $1 million dollar feature is run under weight-for-age conditions which has allowed star gallopers such as Emancipation, Schillaci, Lonhro, Weekend Hussler, Lonhro and most recently Winx, who's won this race the last four years and is the only horse to have won it more than twice.

Renamed in 1974 to honour George E. Ryder who was a racing administrator and stud master, this feature provides the winner with ballot excempt entry into the Doncaster Handicap which runs two weeks later on Saturday, April 4 at Royal Randwick
