A strong local contingent is assembling for the 2026 Railway Stakes, with King Of Light heading betting ahead of eastern-state challengers Buckaroo and Cox Plate winner Cosmic Crusader for the $1.5 million Group 1 over 1600m at Ascot on November 21.
The $4.20 favourite with Unibet Australia, King Of Light resumed with victory in the Group 3 Eurythmic Stakes over 1400m at Ascot on October 17, defeating Bonjoy under Lucy Fiore. The Dan Morton-trained gelding has won seven of his eight starts, including last year's Group 2 WA Guineas over 1600m, which secured him a Railway Stakes ballot exemption.
Buckaroo sits at $7 after finishing second to Surfin' Bird in the Group 2 Kia Ora Stud Mile over 1600m at Flemington, beaten half a length under James McDonald. The Chris Waller-trained gelding won the Group 1 Underwood Stakes in 2024 before finishing runner-up in that year's Caulfield Cup.
At $8, Cosmic Crusader is prominent in betting following his Group 1 Cox Plate victory at Flemington, where he defeated Birdman and Aeliana just seven days after finishing fourth in the Caulfield Cup. The Bob Peters-owned gelding was previously trained in Perth by Michael Grantham, winning last year's Group 1 Northerly Stakes before transferring to Andrea Leek in Victoria, although connections are yet to decide whether he will return west for the Railway Stakes.
Hot And High shares the $11 quote after resuming with victory in the Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes over 1000m at Ascot on October 17. The Dan Morton-trained mare has won seven of her eight starts, including the Listed Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic over 1400m, and is being aimed towards her first attempt at 1600m.
Also at $11 is Rock Fest, who resumed with victory over 1200m at Ascot on October 17 for Daniel and Ben Pearce. The Awesome Rock gelding finished third behind King Of Light in last year's WA Guineas and is being aimed towards the Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes over 1500m as his final Railway lead-up.
King Of Light, Hot And High and Rock Fest have all returned with wins at Ascot, while Buckaroo and Cosmic Crusader remain potential interstate visitors, with the latter's participation still to be confirmed following his Cox Plate triumph.

Railway Stakes History
Arguably Western Australia's most prestigious race, the Railway Stakes boasts more than a century of history and remains one of the highlights of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
First run in 1887 when Nimrod claimed the inaugural edition, the Railway Stakes was originally contested over 2000m before eventually settling at its current distance of 1600m in 1984. The race gained Group 1 status in 1979 and is now worth $1.5 million.
The Railway Stakes is the first Group 1 event of the Perth Summer Carnival, followed by the Winterbottom Stakes and Northerly Stakes, with the famous Ascot mile regularly attracting leading local gallopers and interstate challengers.
The race has also served as a launching pad for horses aiming to establish themselves in the eastern states, with Scales Of Justice, Regal Power and Inspirational Girl among the more recent examples. Its honour roll also features champions such as Northerly, Better Loosen Up, Luckygray and Western Empire.
Northerly won the 2000 edition before going on to claim two Cox Plates, while Scales Of Justice followed his 2016 Railway triumph with victory in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington in 2019. Luckygray is another notable multiple winner, claiming the race in 2011 and 2013.
Bustler (2023), Port Lockroy (2024) and Watch Me Rock (2025) have won the past three editions, with the latter giving trainers Grant and Alana Williams another Railway Stakes victory when scoring under William Pike, defeating Western Empire and Sentimental Hero.
