Caulfield Cup History

The Caulfield Cup is one of the oldest Group One races on the Australian racing calendar and is the pinnacle race at the prestigious Melbourne Racing Club. First run and won by Newminster in 1879, the Caulfield Cup is now arguably a top-3 race in the country.

The race became Group One in 1979 which coincided with the event launching onto the world stage.
Held at Caulfield, the Cup was run at Flemington during World War II and the 1943 race was run in divisions, but Caulfield has played host to the race in every other edition.

After being opened for international competitors in 1998, there have been a number of international winners, including Kiwi pair Let's Elope and Mongolian Khan, Dunaden and Japanese star Admire Rakti.

Legendary trainer Bart Cummings holds the record with seven winners, most notably Ming Dynasty, which scored two Caulfield Cup wins.

It is typically a cleanly-run race but the 1885 Caulfield Cup resulted in 15 of the 44 horses falling. The incident resulted in the death of a jockey and the field is now limited to 18 horses plus emergencies.

Caulfield Cup Field

The Thousand Guineas field won’t be confirmed until the week leading into the event.

The Thousand Guineas often attracts a smaller field as opposed to the Caulfield Guineas for the lads so don’t anticipate a massive range of fillies taking part in this event.

Caulfield Cup Form Guide

The Caulfield Cup form guide has been easy to conduct recently with favourites delivering in the big event.
Outside of Boom Time’s 2017 upset at huge odds it has been a favourites race with Best Solution, Jameka, Admire Ratki and Dunaden among the recent winners in the event.

The 2019 edition of the race looms a highly competitive affair and we’ll have your tips and betting strategy for the day.
