Coolmore Stud Stakes Form Guide

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a stallion making racing which makes it a highly entertaining race.

This feature has been won by star sires Encosta de Lago, Sepoy and Zoustar. Although Sunlight and September Run, both Fillies, this race is typically a colts’ event.

Punters should follow the star colts leading into the event with favourites having a strong record in the race.

Coolmore Stud Stakes 2025 Betting Insights, Stats & Trends

  • 2024 Winner: Switzerland ran a dominant 2¾-length victory, giving Chris Waller his sixth win in 11 years, and marking James McDonald’s third triumph in four renewals

  • Favourites hold reasonable strike rate: 5 favourites have won since 2010, but several years have seen mid‑priced victories, so solid form is key

  • Most winners placed in top four of lead-up races like the Danehill Stakes, McNeil Stakes, Red Anchor Stakes, or Poseidon Stakes (1200–1400 m). Switzerland notably bounced back with a big win in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes prior to the Coolmore

  • Exclusively for three-year-olds, making this a stallion-making sprint. While predominantly colts and geldings, occasional fillies win (e.g., September Run, Sunlight)

  • Notable winners in double-digit odds include Ozzmosis ($16 in 2023), September Run ($11 in 2020), and Sunlight ($11 in 2018). Recent years like 2023 and 2024 favored runners in the $5–$8 range, but longshots remain viable in exotics

Coolmore Stud Stakes History

Originally run for two-year-old juveniles, the Coolmore Stud Stakes became a three-year-old feature in 1969.

It was previously held on Australian Cup day in earlier in the year but the Victoria Racing Club moved the race to the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes was given Group 1 status in 2006 when Gold Edition was victorious and since then it has become a must-win race for any early stud prospects.

Unfortunately the race has meant that winners are sometimes retired very early in their careers to begin life as a sire.

Zoustar and Sepoy are two examples of this and there'll be plenty more going into the future.
