Flemington opens the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Saturday with one of Australian racing's great programs, headlined by the $3 million Group 1 Victoria Derby over 2500m.
The Coolmore Stud Stakes and Empire Rose Stakes complete the Group 1 treble, while the nine-race card also includes the Carbine Club Stakes, Wakeful Stakes and Damien Oliver. The track was rated a Good 4 on Thursday, with the rail in the true position and showers forecast ahead of race day.
Our race-by-race betting tips and selections for Flemington are below, with broader sports coverage available through

Flemington Tips October 31
Race 1 - Channel 9 Carbine Club Stakes Tips (1600m)
Chris Waller has made the Carbine Club Stakes a genuine target race, with all five of his previous winners subsequently winning in Group 1 company, and 10. The Roaring Sun is the most interesting of his three runners this year.
The Autumn Sun colt was well backed in a good debut effort before a break and did plenty wrong first-up at Kembla, settling at the rear before finding the line for third. He was scratched from a much easier maiden during the week to take his place here, which suggests the stable is confident he can measure up.
He remains raw, but the mile should suit and Damian Lane takes over. There looks to be plenty of ability there once he learns to put everything together and, while maturity right now is the query, he could be the best of the Waller trio going forward.
2. Unhinged is the obvious danger after consecutive wins. He came from last to score strongly at Rosehill on October 14, is improving with every run this preparation and gets James McDonald from barrier two.
3. High Falls has done nothing wrong in two starts, progressing from a Hamilton maiden victory to a seven-length Warrnambool romp. Those races have not rated particularly strongly, but he could hardly have done more and is bred to appreciate the mile and beyond.
8. Zoehrer is the bolter. He had some useful form around his maiden win, then was dragged back from barrier 13 in the Gothic Stakes after more than five weeks between runs and made some ground without threatening. He draws better and gets visors for the first time.

Race 2 - TAB One Pool Vanity Tips (1400m)
1. Regal Ambition should not have lost too many admirers when third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas, where both the track pattern and race shape worked against her.
The first two out were the first two home, while Regal Ambition settled back from barrier 10 before working home into third. The bigger expanses of Flemington should suit a filly who has shown a big finish but very little tactical speed.
There has been some discussion around stepping her into stronger company or further in trip, but dropping back to 1400m looks a sensible move for a talented filly who is still doing a few things wrong. She can build some confidence here before being tested over further later.
12. Blue Dream was hard to miss winning on debut at Kyneton. The Yulong filly was slow away, came from last and wide before getting there in the final stride. That is a difficult performance to produce around a tight circuit, particularly at start one, and 1400m should suit.
4. Pin Up Sheila won both juvenile starts before returning with two solid efforts this spring. She looked as though some headgear may help last time and gets winkers for the first time here.
8. Autumn Lover has been ticking over well in decent company since breaking her maiden and should have finished closer in the Gothic Stakes after being held up at key stages.
Selections: 1-12-4-8
Race 3 - HKJC World Pool Wakeful Stakes Tips (2000m)
The safest option in the Wakeful looks 1. Icelady, who has missed the placings only once in six starts and appears to have improved as the distances have increased.
The Ciaron Maher-trained filly won the Thousand Guineas Prelude before finishing runner-up to Saintly Dancer in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas, with almost a month between those two starts. She should have a better platform now for 2000m.
Her pedigree also points strongly towards the trip. Icelady comes from the same family as dual Group 1 winner Kenedna, whose victories included the Doomben Cup over 2000m, while staying performer Matusalem also features in the family. She has tactical speed and should give herself every chance near the pace.
8. Anglais is the upside runner. Her ability had been evident before she started putting things together last time, and the progression suggests she may still have as much improvement to come as anything in the field. The jump from 1400m to 2000m is unconventional, but she appeals as a filly whose ceiling is still largely unknown.
3. De Armas brings some of the stronger established form after finishing runner-up in the Flight Stakes and then fourth in the Thousand Guineas. The 2000m is an obvious question, but there are fewer class queries with her than most.
19. Girl With A Pearl is worth including if the emergency gains a start. Blinkers go on for the first time and she has looked better suited as the trips increase.
Selections: 1-8-3-19
Race 4 - G.H. Mumm Rising Fast Stakes Tips (1200m)
5. Sweynesday appeals each-way after producing a very encouraging Australian return in the Caulfield Sprint.
His New Zealand form suggested he was one of the better sprinters there, with references that gave confidence he could measure up at this level in Australia. In the Caulfield Sprint, he was the only runner making significant ground from the rear and produced the fastest closing work of the meeting.
Most of his exposed form has come over a little further, so the rise to 1200m second-up suits. The Flemington straight is a new challenge, but that first-up performance gives him an excellent platform to improve.
12. King Zephyr is another who can be backed each-way. He has been frustrating for punters, but the overall record remains strong and his Gilgai Stakes return was better than the finishing position suggests. He has since completed a jump-out, carries 2.5kg less and William Pike looks an ideal rider for a horse who likes to be saved for one late run.
2. Napoleonic gets blinkers for the first time and James McDonald aboard. He has lacked the killer blow since winning on Cox Plate Day last year, but has remained competitive in considerably stronger races than this.
17. The Cosmic One takes a huge jump in class, but he has won five straight and makes his own luck on speed. The South Australian visitor is tough and deserves his opportunity.

Race 5 - The ABC Bullion Damien Oliver Tips (1400m)
Barrier one is probably the biggest query for 5. Warnie, a horse who generally looks better with room to build momentum, but the return to Flemington is firmly in his favour.
The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper comes out of two honest Group 1 performances and drops back to 1400m. His last three tries on spacious Melbourne tracks have all resulted in victories, including at Sandown, Pakenham and in this race last year, when Mark Zahra partnered him with 57kg.
He gets exactly that same jockey-weight combination on Saturday. The concern is being buried away from the inside draw, but if Zahra can find clear air at the right time, the Flemington setup gives Warnie every chance to bounce back.
9. Cafe Millenium makes plenty of appeal at a bigger price if the rain stays away. His wet-track form is poor, so the latest run is easy enough to forgive, while his Flemington 1400m record stands at three wins and a placing from eight starts. A wide draw is almost ideal for his get-back pattern and Celine Gaudray has ridden him to each of his past three victories.
12. Persian Spirit returned to winning form with a better ride last start and this isn't much harder. He carries 1.5kg less, Craig Williams stays aboard and he is already a two-time Flemington winner.
17. Scheelite strips fitter from his Cranbourne return and carries 7.5kg less here. He won over this track and distance second-up in March in a similar event and should be one of the main on-speed influences.

Race 6 - Coolmore Stud Stakes Tips (1200m)
Mark Zahra was one of the stars of Derby Day last year and partners another deserving favourite in 1. The Next Episode.
The Ciaron Maher-trained colt proved his straight-track credentials with an impressive first-up Danehill Stakes victory at Flemington on October 3, sustaining his run to reel in Natural Fling. Concerns after some disappointing Sydney trials earlier in spring were erased by stronger Victorian hit-outs and that successful return.
The main query is firmer ground, although his only previous attempt away from rain-affected going came on debut in the Golden Gift, when he was found to be lame and slow to recover. He has otherwise been almost faultless and looks to have been prepared specifically for this race.
14. Pembrey is the value chance. Her Silver Shadow Stakes win first-up was outstanding, comfortably accounting for Bangkok Hottie and Global Goal. That form was subsequently strengthened when Bangkok Hottie won the Furious and Tea Rose Stakes before Global Goal claimed the Flight Stakes. She disappointed in the Furious but had a slow recovery and has been freshened specifically for this assignment.
11. Doubt Time continues to progress. He produced the second-fastest final 200m when fifth in the Danehill, then the fastest closing 800m, 600m and 400m when third in the Blue Sapphire. Blinkers go on after a good recent straight-track hit-out.
9. Mbube brings the right form through The Next Episode and Natural Fling. His late work in the Danehill after a slick earlier split suggested he was still a run short and this has always looked the target.

Race 7 - Howden Victoria Derby Tips (2500m)
Be wary of dropping off 13. Russian Rock after one disappointing performance in the Caulfield Classic, particularly when he went into that race as a well-supported favourite.
He played up in the barriers, began awkwardly and never really found his rhythm, although nothing ran past him late. Prior to that he had returned with a strong Kilmore victory before producing an encouraging staying performance in the Bill Stutt Stakes, hitting a flat spot before picking up again through the line.
That run gave the impression he was looking for more ground and the 2500m at Flemington could suit much better. Michael Dee also knows how to win this race at a price after partnering Manzoice in 2022.
6. Vallice was ridden to win the Caulfield Classic, with Mark Zahra taking him straight to the front before King Snitz denied him narrowly. There is a strong case that he is more effective ridden colder, with his Super Impose Stakes run at Flemington especially encouraging. The son of Maurice looks ready for a genuine staying test and the Maher-Zahra combination won this race last year with Observer.
12. Written Empire is an interesting outsider. He beat subsequent Derby runner Murshidi when breaking his maiden and had been consistent before failing to settle in the Moonee Valley Vase. A crossover noseband goes on to help him relax, while Harry Coffey's recent Group 1 record over staying trips commands respect.
1. Cormier brings the strong Sydney reference after finishing third in the Spring Champion Stakes. The seven-day turnaround and travel are obvious hurdles, but he is another son of Maurice and the less brilliant, more genuinely staying nature of this race may suit.
Selections: 13-6-12-1
Race 8 - TAB Empire Rose Stakes Tips (1600m)
Confidence could prove the key for 1. Lady Shenandoah, who ended a winning drought dating back to the 2025 Coolmore Classic with a high-quality Toorak Handicap victory on October 10.
James McDonald had to negotiate a series of tight gaps before arriving late, and he retains the ride. She has been difficult to assess since her outstanding three-year-old season, but even during the quieter periods she has been contesting races around Jimmysstar, Joliestar, Beiwacht and Autumn Glow.
The timing also appeals. One of her better autumn performances came fourth-up over 1600m when runner-up to Idle Flyer in the Queen Of The Turf, and she reaches the same stage of her campaign here.
2. Idle Flyer unquestionably has the class to beat her. She defeated Lady Shenandoah in the Queen Of The Turf and her first-up Winx Stakes run was arguably the better performance of the pair, producing the third-fastest final 200m. Her preparation has been frustrating since, but she had excuses covering ground in The Invitation last Saturday and connections have elected to press on seven days later.
4. Cilacap is the roughie. She was caught wide first-up in the Rose Of Kingston and produced strong closing sectionals despite finishing fifth. Her Victorian and South Australian form has generally been stronger than her Sydney efforts, while barrier four gives Michael Dee a chance to find a much more economical position.
10. Concord Connie is not well treated on ratings but looks to have been aimed here. She was unsuited by the Caulfield pattern last time, steps to 1600m third-up and remains unbeaten at Flemington. With only six starts behind her, she may have the biggest spike still to come.
Selections: 1-2-4-10
Race 9 - Asahi Super Dry Sprint Tips (1100m)
The best bet on the Derby Day card is 4. Flying For Fun, provided the weather behaves.
The Bryce Heys-trained mare does not want genuinely wet ground, so there is little need to bet too early with showers forecast. On good ground, however, her form is strong enough to suggest she has Group 1 ability away from the absolute topliners.
She should have won the Robert Sangster Stakes during the Adelaide carnival and again had excuses in The Goodwood. The daughter of Spieth has already handled the Flemington straight, finishing runner-up in this race last year, before failing to cope with a Heavy 9 when backing up in the Champions Sprint.
Flying For Fun is now third-up, draws ideally out in barrier 16 and gets James McDonald. On suitable ground, she looks very hard to beat back against her own sex.
13. Swift Force can give some cheek on speed. The Tasmanian mare remains lightly raced and was too keen first-up, which likely cost her victory. She should strip much calmer for that run and drops to 55kg.
10. Bridal Waltz has perhaps been a little overbet this preparation but continues to race honestly. There is no disgrace in her recent form around Point Barrow and Flying For Fun, while her straight-track record is a major positive.
11. Eagle Express was luckless at Caulfield last start after a consistent beginning to the campaign and remains one of the better value inclusions for wider exotics.
