The 2026 Victoria Derby at Flemington features a competitive field of 18, with Hierarchy tipped each-way based on his strong closing sectionals in the Moonee Valley Vase and a favourable barrier four. His pedigree suggests he can handle the 2500m, and he is expected to settle closer in running. Russian Rock is also recommended each-way, with improvement likely from a better draw and extra distance, while Written Empire is suggested as a roughie for exotics, benefiting from a gear change and consistent form. All selections are each-way in a wide-open Group 1.

The 2026 Victoria Derby presents a wide-open staying challenge for the three-year-olds at Flemington on Saturday, with 18 acceptors set to tackle 2500m in one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious Group 1 races.

Dating back to 1855, the Victoria Derby has a rich history of producing outstanding stayers, with past winners including Phar Lap, Efficient and Hitotsu. This year's edition features a competitive mix of progressive youngsters, with several stepping into uncharted territory over the longer distance.

2026 Victoria Derby Tips

2026 Victoria Derby Best Bet - Hierarchy

A very competitive Victoria Derby field has been assembled for 2026, with no obvious standout among the three-year-olds, making it a race worth approaching with a few at bigger prices. The first of those is Hierarchy, who gives Godolphin a chance to claim back-to-back editions following Observer's victory last year.

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained colt is still in his first preparation, which always presents a query when progressing towards a staying trip, but he's hardly put a hoof wrong. He followed an encouraging 1200m debut with a breakthrough victory over 1400m at Cranbourne before lacking the turn-of-foot to threaten over the mile at Caulfield, although that was still a sound performance.

He was a single-figure chance in last Saturday's Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase, where he looked one of the runners having a genuine Victoria Derby trial. A wide barrier forced a conservative ride, and while he lacked the immediate acceleration to threaten over 2040m, he finished strongly from the rear, recording the fastest final 400m and 200m of the race.

The significant positive this time is barrier four, which should allow Ben Melham to settle much closer to the speed and give Hierarchy every opportunity. He's also a beautifully bred youngster by Dubawi out of the late Colette, the dual Group 1-winning Godolphin mare who claimed the 2020 Australian Oaks over 2400m before returning to Flemington to win the Empire Rose Stakes on Derby Day the following year.

That pedigree gives him every chance of handling the rise to 2500m, while his breeding also suggests versatility on both good and rain-affected ground. With the prospect of a more economical run in transit and a preparation geared towards this target, Hierarchy makes each-way appeal in a wide-open Victoria Derby.
2026 Victoria Derby Value Bet - Russian Rock

Be wary of dropping off Russian Rock after one disappointing performance, particularly given that came in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic on October 17, a key form reference for Saturday's Victoria Derby. He was a well-supported favourite in that 2000m contest but appeared below his best, playing up in the barriers before beginning awkwardly and failing to justify the market confidence.

Although safely held in fourth, there was still some merit in the effort, with the Michael Trotter-trained youngster forced to chase from behind runners who enjoyed more economical passages. His form leading into that assignment had been encouraging, and it's worth noting that nothing ran past him in that latest outing.

Russian Rock showed ability when placing on debut at a big price in March before a spell, then resumed with a strong victory at Kilmore after covering additional ground. He subsequently tackled the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes over 1600m, where he was well supported at longer odds and produced an encouraging staying effort, hitting a flat spot at a crucial stage before picking up again through the line.

That performance suggested he was a genuine Derby prospect, and the rise to 2500m on the spacious Flemington circuit should be right up his alley. Michael Dee takes the ride and knows what it takes to produce an upset in this race, having partnered $21 outsider Manzoice to victory in 2022, while his Group 1 record also includes success in the New Zealand Derby.

Barrier seven should provide Dee with more options than Russian Rock had last time, and there's every chance the gelding can improve sharply with a more suitable race shape and additional ground. His Caulfield Classic failure has pushed him out to an attractive quote, but his earlier form and staying profile suggest he's being overlooked.
2026 Victoria Derby Roughie - Written Empire

Three of Harry Coffey's four Group 1 victories have come over 2000m or further, including his career-defining Caulfield Cup triumph aboard Duke De Sessa in 2024, and the accomplished rider partners an intriguing outsider in Written Empire for Saturday's Victoria Derby.

The association with the Lindsay Park stable is another factor worth respecting, with Coffey riding nine winners for Ben, Will and JD Hayes this season at a strike rate exceeding 39%, returning a positive ROI of more than 20%. It's a formidable combination, and one that could easily be overlooked with Written Empire among the outsiders in this competitive staying feature.

The son of Written Tycoon has been consistent throughout his first preparation, beaten just over half a length in a strong Bendigo maiden on debut before breaking through at the same circuit second-up, with subsequent Derby contender Murshidi among those comfortably held. He then produced a competitive third over 1600m at Caulfield, coming through a useful form race alongside the likes of True Rebel and Hierarchy.

His sixth placing in last Saturday's Moonee Valley Vase was disappointing to the eye, but he simply failed to settle, which proved costly as the race developed. There was still merit in his work through the line over 2040m, and the Hayes stable has opted to apply a crossover noseband for the Derby in an attempt to help him relax and conserve energy over the longer journey.

That gear change could prove significant, and he's worth forgiving one below-par performance, especially at the price, having started at single-figure odds in all four appearances, each against relevant opposition. With more than $40 available, he looks a must for exotic players and could easily outrun his quote.
