Winterbottom Stakes 2026 Betting Odds - Bassett Hound Heads the Pack
Bassett Hound has emerged as the early favourite for the 2026 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot, following an unbeaten spring highlighted by a fifth consecutive victory in the Guinness Handicap. Despite his impressive form, the Mitchell Pateman-trained gelding has yet to contest stakes company, making the Group 1 over 1200m on 28 November a significant step up. Key interstate contenders include Overpass, a dual Winterbottom winner with an outstanding Ascot record, and Headwall, who brings recent Everest form and Group 1 placings. The $1.5 million race promises a competitive clash between local and interstate sprinters.
- Bassett Hound is the early favourite for the 2026 Winterbottom Stakes
- He faces a significant class rise, having not yet raced in stakes company
- Main rivals include two-time winner Overpass and Everest fourth-placegetter Headwall
Unbeaten this spring, Bassett Hound has moved to the top of betting for the 2026 Winterbottom Stakes, with two-time winner Overpass and Everest placegetter Headwall among the leading interstate contenders for the $1.5 million Group 1 over 1200m at Ascot on November 28.
Bassett Hound is the $6 favourite with Unibet Australia after recording his fifth consecutive victory in Saturday's 1000m Guinness Handicap at Ascot, defeating Devine Belief by half a length under Patrick Carbery. The Mitchell Pateman-trained gelding has won both starts this preparation following a hat-trick at Belmont during the winter, although the Winterbottom would represent a significant rise in class.
Overpass sits at $7 after finishing third in the Group 2 Sydney Stakes over 1200m at Randwick on October 17. The Bjorn Baker-trained eight-year-old won consecutive Winterbottom Stakes in 2023 and 2024 before finishing second last year, giving him an exceptional record at Ascot. He also finished third in last year's $1.5 million Gold Rush over 1400m at the same venue.
Headwall is next at $10 following his fourth behind Tempted, Ka Ying Rising and Joliestar in the $20 million Everest over 1200m at Randwick. The Matthew Smith-trained gelding had previously finished second to Tempted in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes and fifth in The Shorts, while his career highlights include victory in the 2025 Concorde Stakes and placings at Group 1 level.
Bassett Hound is yet to tackle stakes company, while Overpass has already won two Winterbottom Stakes and Headwall brings recent Everest form into the market, with the interstate contingent shaping as the major opposition to the emerging local sprinter.

Winterbottom Stakes History
The Winterbottom Stakes is Perth's premier sprint race, a weight-for-age Group 1 contest run over 1200m at Ascot and one of the highlights of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
Worth $1.5 million, the Winterbottom is one of three Group 1 races held across consecutive weekends in Perth, forming a key part of The Pinnacles series alongside the Railway Stakes and Northerly Stakes.
First contested in 1952 when Raconteur claimed the inaugural running, the race was originally staged over 1400m before being shortened to its current 1200m distance in 1993. It was elevated from Group 2 to Group 1 status in 2011, with champion mare Ortensia winning that year's edition.
The Winterbottom has a rich history of attracting elite sprinters from across Australia, with Buffering, Viddora, Voodoo Lad and Hey Doc among the successful interstate raiders. Other famous winners include Miss Andretti, Takeover Target and Ortensia, who won the race twice before adding Group 1 victories overseas.
One of the race's most memorable editions came in 2008 when Takeover Target narrowly defeated fellow sprinting star Apache Cat, while Buffering claimed the feature in both 2013 and 2015, the latter victory coming in race-record time.
Overpass completed consecutive Winterbottom Stakes victories in 2023 and 2024 before being denied a third straight success by Libertad in 2025, with the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained sprinter scoring by a nose under Jamie Mott.
