Bendigo's ten-race programme on 28 October features the Group 3 Bendigo Cup as its highlight. Kings Valley is the article's feature bet in Race 8, coming off strong Group 2 and Group 1 performances, including a fast-finishing second in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup and a solid Caulfield Cup run. The main concern is his short turnaround, but the drop in class is expected to suit. Other selections include Dirty Look in Race 7, seeking a third straight win, Sunbliss in Race 2 with a favourable drop in grade, Prestige Lucky in Race 3 as an each-way chance, and Mr Independent in Race 5 as a roughie with potential to improve second-up.

Bendigo takes its turn in the spring racing spotlight on Wednesday, October 28, with the $500,000 Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) providing another important staying contest between the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup meetings.

A ten-race program has been assembled for the popular country cup fixture, with the supporting card featuring competitive handicaps and several promising gallopers looking to build on their recent success.

Bendigo Next Best Bet - Race 2 No. 5 Sunbliss

Ethan Brown has enjoyed a terrific spring, riding 18 winners throughout September at a 32% strike rate before adding another 13 in October at 23%, with a 75% return on investment, and the jockey now teams up with the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Sunbliss.

The combination is particularly appealing given Brown's strike rate of better than 30% for the stable over the past 12 months, while the daughter of The Autumn Sun finds a considerably easier assignment after contesting the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes at Caulfield on September 27.

Although never in winning contention after beginning awkwardly, the filly still made late ground and recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the meeting, having previously caught the eye with the fastest closing 200m of the September 9 Sandown Hillside program when runner-up over 1000m.

There is substance to her earlier form, with Sunbliss winning on debut at Pakenham on March 27 before being spelled, while the runner-up from that maiden, Rubarro, subsequently won two of her next three appearances at metropolitan level.

A further jump-out on October 19 has kept the three-year-old ticking over ahead of this third-up assignment, and with only a 1.5kg rise from her latest appearance, a drop in grade and an extra 100m to suit her developing profile, Sunbliss looks well placed to return to winning form.

Bendigo Value Bet - Race 3 No. 9 Prestige Lucky

Patience looks to have paid off for connections of Prestige Lucky, with the four-year-old making a striking impression on debut at Morphettville on October 10 after attracting strong market support for his first race-day appearance.

The Matt Jenkins-trained gelding settled off the speed before unleashing the fastest closing sectionals of the 1100m contest, comfortably gathering in Confucius Flyer despite laying in under pressure through the straight.

That maiden form has already received a significant boost, with the runner-up winning impressively last Saturday, providing an encouraging reference as Prestige Lucky tackles Benchmark 66 company for the first time.

Although the opposition is considerably stronger, the spacious Bendigo circuit should suit a galloper who appreciated being allowed to find his rhythm before building momentum on debut, while his September lead-up work included a second in a strong Cranbourne trial on September 14.

He subsequently won a 1000m jump-out on September 28 under Ben Allen, who reunites with the son of Lucky Vega on Wednesday, and with natural improvement expected from a lightly raced gelding possessing considerable raw talent, Prestige Lucky appeals as an each-way chance.

Bendigo Roughie - Race 5 No. 6 Mr Independent

There was little encouragement in Mr Independent's October 18 resumption at Horsham, but the market drift and his earlier lead-up work suggested he would benefit considerably from that first-up assignment.

The son of Doubtland settled well back over 1400m and never threatened in a race dominated by those positioned closer to the speed, with the four-year-old unable to make an impression on a firm surface that offered little assistance to runners coming from behind.

His earlier form tells a different story, having shown promise on debut at Sandown before returning from a spell with an eye-catching effort at Pakenham in January, then improving sharply to finish runner-up behind the talented Kaye Jay on February 4, a galloper who subsequently performed well at Group level.

Two consecutive victories followed, including an impressive 1800m success on the Caulfield Heath circuit on March 4, when Mr Independent recovered from a flat spot to gather in Pray Day, who comfortably won his next appearance, before the gelding eventually completed his campaign with a Group 2 assignment.

The rise to 1600m second-up looks a much more suitable test, and with Beau Mertens returning after building an excellent partnership with the Julius Sandhu-trained gelding last preparation, sharp improvement second-up wouldn't shock.

Bendigo Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Dirty Look

A hat-trick could be the stepping stone to stronger company for Dirty Look, with Grahame Begg seemingly building the confidence of a progressive four-year-old who has been outstanding in both spring appearances.

The daughter of Super Seth resumed with a dominant two-length victory over 1200m at Sandown Hillside on September 2, proving far too strong for her rivals in a fillies and mares Benchmark 74 despite covering ground, before stepping into mixed company at Cranbourne on September 25.

That second-up success was equally encouraging, with the mare overcoming an awkward passage on a tighter circuit to score by three-quarters of a length as favourite, suggesting she remains capable of further improvement as her preparation develops.

There was plenty of promise throughout her first campaign, when she repeatedly attracted market support against useful opposition, while a quiet second in an October 19 Cranbourne jump-out has provided a suitable fitness boost ahead of Wednesday's third-up assignment.

Although rising in the weights, Dirty Look remains in Benchmark 70 company and finds a race that looks no stronger than her latest victory, with Michael Dee retaining the ride and the spacious Bendigo circuit expected to suit her powerful finishing style as she chases a third straight win.

Bendigo Feature Bet - Race 8 No. 6 Kings Valley

This year's Group 3 Bendigo Cup might lack the depth of some recent editions, but it has attracted a clear standout in Kings Valley, whose outstanding spring form makes him a deserving favourite despite another demanding turnaround.

The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper backed up just seven days after the Caulfield Cup to produce a brilliant runner-up finish in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup at Flemington last Saturday, recording the fastest final 800m, 600m and 400m of the race.

His closing speed was among the highlights of the Cox Plate Day program, including the third-fastest final 200m of the meeting, as he finished half a length behind stablemate Juja Kibo, while another stablemate in Mr Monaco filled third after previously winning at Group 3 level.

The form references extend to his fifth in the Caulfield Cup, where Kings Valley finished just over two lengths behind Kingswood, while Cosmic Crusader, who won the Turnbull Stakes before taking out Saturday's Cox Plate, provides another strong reference to the quality of opposition he has encountered this spring.

The obvious concern is whether the son of Territories can sustain his performances on another short back-up, but his progression since winning at Listed level at Mornington in April has been remarkable, and with the Bendigo Cup presenting a more manageable assignment than his recent Group 1 and Group 2 appearances, Kings Valley is the horse to beat.
