Beiwacht has been installed as the $4 favourite for the $1 million Group 1 C.F. He leads a competitive field featuring Jimmysstar ($5), Angel Capital ($5.50), Lazzura ($7), and Skyhook ($9). The C.F. Beiwacht heads betting for the 2026 C.F. Orr Stakes, with Jimmysstar and Angel Capital next in the market following their Everest appearances, while Chris Waller also has last-start Invitation winner Lazzura among the leading contenders for the $1 million Group 1 at Sandown on November 14.

Beiwacht is the $4 favourite with Unibet Australia after finishing third behind Apocalyptic and Skyhook in the Listed Silver Eagle over 1300m at Randwick on October 17, beaten 0.6 lengths under 58.5kg. The Chris Waller-trained entire had previously won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes over 1400m in August, defeating Mr Brightside and Cosmic Crusader, and also claimed the All Aged Stakes at Randwick during the autumn.

Jimmysstar sits at $5 after finishing sixth behind Tempted in the $20 million Everest over 1200m at Randwick, having won the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at Caulfield three weeks earlier. The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding defeated Extragalactic and Charm Stone in that 1200m feature, adding a fourth Group 1 victory to his record.

Angel Capital is quoted at $5.50 following his eighth in The Everest, where he finished 2.7 lengths behind Tempted. The Chris Waller-trained entire had previously won the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield on September 19, defeating Sepals by 0.8 lengths under Ben Melham, and returns to that distance for the Orr Stakes.

Lazzura is next at $7 after winning Saturday's $2 million Invitation over 1400m at Randwick, defeating Infancy and Verona Rose under Tommy Berry. The Chris Waller-trained mare carried 59kg and had previously won the Group 1 Coolmore Classic over 1500m at Rosehill, with the Orr Stakes presenting another opportunity against open weight-for-age opposition.

Skyhook rounds out the leading five at $9 after finishing second to Apocalyptic in the Silver Eagle, beaten 0.3 lengths with Beiwacht another 0.3 lengths away in third. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained entire had won the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes over 1300m and Shannon Stakes over 1500m at his previous two starts, ending a three-race winning streak with his narrow defeat at Randwick.

The Orr Stakes will be staged at Sandown rather than Caulfield this year, with Beiwacht returning to the 1400m trip of his Memsie Stakes victory, while Jimmysstar and Angel Capital are set to rise in distance following The Everest and Lazzura comes off her Invitation success.

CF Orr Stakes History

The C.F. Orr Stakes was traditionally the first Group 1 of the Australian racing calendar, a 1400m weight-for-age contest staged at Caulfield. From November 2025, the race was moved to the end of the Melbourne spring, taking place one week after Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

First run in 1925 when The Night Patrol claimed the inaugural edition at Williamstown, the race was named in honour of Charles F. Orr, a former chairman of the Williamstown Racing Club. It has since been staged at several Victorian racecourses, including Flemington, Moonee Valley, Sandown and Caulfield.

Historically, the Orr Stakes was a popular starting point for stayers launching their autumn campaigns, with Melbourne Cup winners At Talaq, Let's Elope, Jeune and Saintly all claiming the feature. In more recent decades, however, the race has become a major target for Australia's leading sprinter-milers.

The C.F. Orr Stakes gained Group 1 status in 1993, although its honour roll was already stacked with champions such as Flight, Tobin Bronze, Manikato and Vo Rogue. Manikato won three consecutive editions from 1979 to 1981, a feat matched by Vo Rogue between 1988 and 1990.

Other notable winners include Redoute's Choice, Lonhro, Black Caviar, All Too Hard and Typhoon Tracy, with the latter claiming back-to-back victories in 2010 and 2011.

Jacquinot (2023), Mr Brightside (2024) and Another Wil (February 2025) were among the final winners under the traditional autumn schedule, before Jimmysstar claimed the second running of the race in November 2025, completing the switch to its new spring position.
