The Toorak Handicap is a $1M feature race ran in the Melbourne spring that is worth a lot more to the winner than just the cheque.

A ballot exempt race for the Caulfield Cup, the Toorak Handicap is a great feature-shaping race ahead of the big three events of the spring carnival.

The Toorak Handicap (1600m) is held at the Caulfield racecourse in Victoria, with the 2025 edition taking place on Saturday October 11.

Antino won the 2024 race by 6½ lengths over Another Wil.

Toorak Handicap Form Guide

When assessing the Toorak Handicap form guide, a key lead-up race is the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes held three weeks prior to this event. It’s run under the same conditions and is run at Caulfield, making it the logical precursor.

Form out of the Toorak Handicap often stacks up nicely in the Group One Emirates Stakes at Flemington on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

There has been a good mix of middle-distance and staying winners, which has made it tough for punters to identify the winner, and it’s not always the big names that take this event out.

Punters should look at form from prior Melbourne Spring Carnivals as a good for the Toorak Handicap.

Toorak Handicap 2025 Betting Insights, Stats & Trends

  • Four + five year olds have dominated the race since 2000, winning on nine occasions

  • Favourites have a decent strike rate in recent times - I’m Thunderstruck ($3.20) won in 2021 and Antino was second-favourite in 2024

  • Inside barriers favoured - In 2024, both Antino (barrier 8) and Another Wil (barrier 1) led the market and performed well

  • Antino at 6YO and Another Wil at 5YO reflect the 4–6 year-old peak age range

  • Key preps include Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400 m) held three weeks prior—and it's a strong form guide

Toorak Handicap History

The first Toorak Handicap was run and won 1881 by Josephine.

The quality of recent winners doesn’t reflect the history of the race, with Galilee, Gunsynd and More Joyous among the former champions of the event.

The Toorak Handicap is a ballot exempt race for the Caulfield Cup but history suggests it is somewhat of a poisoned chalice with Leilani the last horse to complete the Toorak/Caulfield cup double in 1974.

Champion stayer Galilee was able to win the Toorak Handicap/Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup treble in 1966, a feat which has never been replicated.
