The 2026 Toorak Handicap market is wide open ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 mile at Caulfield, with Regal Award holding favouritism and several runners coming through the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes alongside a rapidly improving mare from a different form line.
Regal Award heads betting at $6 with Unibet Australia after returning with a strong third in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m. The Phillip and Tommy Stokes-trained four-year-old finished just over a length from Angel Capital and now gets his chance to step back to 1600m, a distance at which he has already shown himself capable.
Sabaj sits on the second line at $8 after finishing 12th in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes first-up. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding now gets another run under his belt and returns to the mile as he looks to improve sharply on that Caulfield effort.
Changing Colours also sits at $8 after making it four consecutive wins with a breakthrough success in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes over 1600m at Caulfield. The Lucy Yeomans-trained mare defeated Sass Appeal by a length and now takes the significant step into Group 1 handicap company while staying over the same course and distance.
Evaporate is quoted at $8.50 after finishing ninth in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, beaten just under four lengths. The Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained gelding had won over 1500m at Sandown at his previous start and now gets back to the mile, where he has already produced some of his better form.
Sepals is next at $10 after a strong return when runner-up to Angel Capital in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. The Cliff Brown-trained gelding was beaten three-quarters of a length and brings an excellent 1600m record into the Toorak, having won five of six starts at the distance.
Lady Shenandoah sits at $13 after finishing fourth in the same Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, only 1.27 lengths from the winner. The Chris Waller-trained mare has already proven herself over the Randwick mile and now gets another chance at 1600m after two encouraging runs this preparation.
Feroce shares the $13 quote after finishing fifth in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, beaten just over two lengths. The Dominic Sutton-trained gelding now steps back to the mile as another runner coming through what shapes as one of the key lead-up races to this year’s Toorak.
With Regal Award, Sepals, Lady Shenandoah and Feroce all coming through the same Group 1 lead-up, while Changing Colours arrives off four straight wins and a course-and-distance success, the Toorak Handicap market remains one of the most open among the major races on Caulfield Guineas Day.

Toorak Handicap History
The Toorak Handicap is one of Australia’s most prestigious mile handicaps and has been a fixture of the Caulfield racing calendar since its inaugural running in 1881, when Josephine claimed the first edition.
Contested over 1600m, the race has long been an important target for high-class milers, with its handicap conditions regularly bringing together established Group 1 performers and emerging spring stars.
Its honour roll includes some outstanding names in Australian racing, including Gunsynd, The Trump, More Joyous and Typhoon Tracy, highlighting the quality and versatility traditionally required to win the Caulfield feature.
The Toorak was elevated to Group 1 status in 1979 and remains one of the benchmark handicap races of the Melbourne spring, with its form often carrying through to other major mile and weight-for-age contests later in the carnival.
The most recent winners are Attrition in 2023, Antino in 2024 and Transatlantic, who claimed the 2025 edition.
