Champion trainer Chris Waller, who has produced four of the last 11 Caulfield Guineas winners—including the past two—enters 2026 with two top contenders: Tron Bolt and Campione D'italia, both holding $6 favouritism. Tron Bolt, owned by the same connections as past winner The Autumn Sun, boasts a recent Group 1 JJ Atkins victory, while Campione D'italia showed promising form with a Group 1 win and a strong Champagne Stakes performance. The Caulfield Guineas, one of Australia's premier races for three-year-olds, continues to be a pivotal event for emerging talent.

Chris Waller has prepared four of the last 11 Caulfield Guineas winners, including the last two with Autumn Boy and Private Life.

The champion trainer is represented by Tron Bolt and Campione D'italia, two Group 1-winning juveniles who share $6 favouritism with Betr for the 2026 Caulfield Guineas.

Tron Bolt improved off a debut third to win his next three starts, the latest a 1600m victory in the Group 1 JJ Atkins on June 13.

He's owned by Hermitage Thoroughbreds, who also raced The Autumn Sun, the Chris Waller-trained colt that won both the JJ Atkins and Caulfield Guineas in 2018.

Campione D'italia won two of his five starts during his first campaign, including the Group 1 Inglis Sires' over 1400m, which followed an eye-catching fourth-place finish in the Golden Slipper.

His preparation culminated with a runner-up finish in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes, a 1600m feature won by Fireball ($8), a son of Snitzel who is also trained by Chris Waller.

Caulfield Guineas Winners

One of Melbourne's oldest and most prestigious Group 1 races, the Caulfield Guineas was first run in 1881.

While it was temporarily staged at Flemington during the wartime years, the race has long been synonymous with Caulfield and remains a premier test for three-year-old colts and geldings.

Contested over 1600m since its inception, the Caulfield Guineas was elevated to Group 1 status in 1979 as part of the Australian racing classification system. That year it was won by Runaway Kid, following Manikato's triumph in the final pre-Group 1 edition.

Widely regarded as a stallion-making race, the honour roll features some of Australia's most influential sires, including Lonhro, Redoute's Choice and All Too Hard.

The Guineas has also served as a key form reference for the Victoria Derby, with 16 horses completing the coveted double, although Helenus in 2002 remains the most recent to achieve the feat.

Griff (2023), Private Life (2024) and Autumn Boy (2025) have won the last three editions of the Caulfield Guineas.
