A high-class group of middle-distance performers are already prominent in betting for the 2026 Might And Power Stakes, which will be run over 2000m at Caulfield on Saturday, October 10. The Group 1 weight-for-age feature carries $1 million in prizemoney.
Aeliana heads the early market at $4 with BetRight as Chris Waller maps out a spring campaign aimed at the major staying and weight-for-age features.
The mare established herself among Australia’s elite last season with Group 1 victories in the Ranvet Stakes and Tancred Stakes, and she remains prominent in markets for both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.
Birdman is next at $5 after emerging as one of last season’s major improvers.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding progressed rapidly through the autumn, winning the Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield before breaking through at Group 1 level in the Doomben Cup over 2000m.
Sir Delius occupies the third line at $6 and brings some of the strongest established 2000m form into the market.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained entire won three Group 1 races last season, including the Underwood Stakes, Turnbull Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and remains one of the leading Cox Plate contenders heading into spring.

Light Infantry Man is already a proven Group 1 performer at this distance and went within a narrow margin of winning another Australian Cup during the autumn, while his spring preparation began with a return over 1600m at Caulfield in August.
Cosmic Crusader has made an excellent start to his Melbourne campaign, progressing from a Bletchingly Stakes victory to success in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on August 15.
The progressive galloper continues to rise through the grades and now shapes as an intriguing contender as connections stretch him towards the longer Group 1 weight-for-age races later in the spring.

Might And Power Stakes History
The Might And Power Stakes, originally known as the Caulfield Stakes, is one of Melbourne’s premier weight-for-age races of the spring and was first contested in 1886, when Isonomy claimed the inaugural edition.
The race has carried several names throughout its history, including the Yalumba Stakes, Ladbrokes Stakes and Neds Stakes, before being renamed the Might And Power Stakes in 2021 in honour of the champion galloper who won both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in 1997 before taking out the Cox Plate the following year.
Run over 2000m under weight-for-age conditions, the race has long been a key lead-up to the Cox Plate and regularly attracts some of the country’s leading middle-distance performers.
The feature was elevated to Group 1 status in 1979 and has since remained one of the benchmark weight-for-age contests of the Melbourne spring.
The most recent winners are Alligator Blood in 2023, Deny Knowledge in 2024 and Globe, who claimed the 2025 edition.
