Tancred Stakes History
The Tancred Stakes dates back to 1963 and was given group one status in 1980 which was celebrated in style with one of Australia's best ever gallopers in Kingston Town taking out that edition.
It was a race that certainly got stronger from the late 90's onwards which did coincide with a very strong era and saw champions in Octagonal, Might And Power and Tie The Knot rounding out the decade for this feature.
This race is named after Harry Tancred who was a rugby union player and later, a successful businessman off the back of wholesale butchering and served as Chairman for the Sydney Turf Club.
