Champagne Stakes History

The Group One Champagne Stakes dates back to 1861 and had many changing conditions in its early years.

It was run as a six furlong sprint from 1883 up until 1971 but with the introduction of the richer and more prestigious Golden Slipper in the 1950's, a decision was made to make the Champagne Stakes a 1600 metre event to follow both the Slipper and then Sires Produce with a natural progression in trip with the "Triple Crown".

Early famous winners of the Champagne Stakes include Ajax, Todman and Vain whilst Samantha Miss and Pierro are a few of the more modern champions to win this group one.
