The Memsie Stakes is the first Group 1 race of the new Melbourne racing season, with the 1400m weight-for-age event to be contested at Caulfield on Saturday, August 29.

Sheza Alibi is the clear $2 favourite with BetRight following an outstanding season in which she completed five consecutive victories.

The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained mare established herself among Australia’s leading gallopers with dominant Group 1 wins in the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster Mile over 1600m.

She finished more than four lengths clear in the Doncaster Mile and has since returned with an encouraging second in a Pakenham jump-out ahead of her likely first-up appearance in the Memsie Stakes.

Angel Capital is the $6 second favourite and, despite still being without a Group 1 victory, recorded three placings at the highest level last season, along with a very unlucky fourth in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes last spring.

The Chris Waller-trained entire is expected to resume in the Missile Stakes before potentially heading to the Memsie Stakes second-up, with the 1400m Group 1 considered a suitable early spring target.

Aeliana, Jimmysstar, Mr Brightside and Cosmic Crusader share the third line of betting at $8.

Aeliana could instead resume in the Winx Stakes at Randwick one week earlier, while Mr Brightside is being considered for another first-up attempt at a race he won in 2023 before finishing runner-up in 2024 and 2025.

Jimmysstar brings proven Group 1 weight-for-age credentials, while the lightly raced Cosmic Crusader is among the emerging gallopers being considered for the opening Melbourne Group 1 of the season.

The Memsie Stakes is run over 1400m under weight-for-age conditions at Caulfield and was first contested in 1899.

The race was elevated to Group 1 status in 2013 and has been won by some of Australian racing’s most accomplished performers, including Sunline, Makybe Diva, So You Think and Atlantic Jewel.

Behemoth became the most recent dual winner when successful in 2020 and 2021, while Mr Brightside claimed the 2023 edition.

The most recent winners are Pinstriped in 2024 and Treasurethe Moment, who resumed with victory in the 2025 Memsie Stakes.
