The Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) has long been one of the key early-season weight-for-age contests, regularly bringing together established stars and emerging spring contenders at Caulfield.
Its recent honour roll underlines the quality required, with winners including Mr Brightside, Snapdancer, Behemoth, Pinstriped and Treasurethe Moment, while the race has also featured some of Australia’s biggest names among the placegetters.
The 2026 edition adds another intriguing chapter, with Jimmysstar, Angel Capital, Mr Brightside and a strong group of spring contenders set to clash in Saturday’s renewal.

After The Memsie
The Memsie Stakes has regularly provided an early spring guide to horses capable of making their presence felt at the highest level later in the campaign.
Mr Brightside backed up his 2023 Memsie Stakes victory by winning the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington at his next start, before finishing runner-up in both the King Charles III Stakes and Champions Mile later that spring.
The 2022 edition also produced strong subsequent form. Runner-up I'm Thunderstruck went on to defeat Alligator Blood in the Makybe Diva Stakes at his next start, while third-placed Cascadian continued to build an outstanding Group 1 record in the seasons that followed.
Behemoth had already established himself as one of Australia’s leading weight-for-age performers when he successfully defended his Memsie Stakes crown in 2021, becoming the first horse since Sunline in 2001 to win the race in consecutive years.
The race’s wider honour roll adds further weight to its standing, with champions including Makybe Diva, So You Think and Atlantic Jewel among the famous names to have won the Memsie Stakes before going on to achieve even greater success.
