Melbourne’s first Group 1 meeting of the season takes centre stage at Caulfield on Saturday, August 29, with the Memsie Stakes headlining a quality 10-race program.

The supporting card has plenty of depth, with the Courtza Stakes, The Heath 1100, McNeil Stakes and Heatherlie Stakes among the key races, while the Memsie brings together some of the country’s leading gallopers over 1400m.

Caulfield Tips August 29

Race 1 - 12:05PM Aushorse Handicap Tips (1400m)

It was an honest return in stronger company from 5. Butternut Princess, who whacked away for fourth-of-seven here on July 12 over 1100m. That form looks strong enough for this BM78 against her own sex.

She was then back in this grade when going to 1400m on August 15, but was unsuited settling back in a leader-dominated race and just peaked late after making a wide chasing effort for third.

Going from 1100m to 1400m last start should see her strip fitter third-up, while blinkers replace the winkers. She was a third-up winner over this journey in February before a runner-up finish at Group 3 level over this track-and-trip, and remained competitive in two March outings at Group level.

11. Puglia is up in grade and doesn't get much respect in the early market, but it's the right time to attack a city race after back-to-back July victories. She's drawn for a soft run under Craig Williams from barrier one, while further track upgrades will be in her favour.

Forgive 3. Stealth Of Night's first-up loss when covering ground here on July 11. She maps for more favours from barrier three, although she was a little slow away in an August 14 jump-out. 1. Davida also has to be included after racing consistently and having excuses at Flemington before atoning at Caulfield Heath last start.

Race 2 - 12:35PM Sportsbet Fixed Odds Exotics Handicap Tips (1800m)

We've been with 14. Jenni Multabella in her last two appearances. The first was a second-up victory at Sandown over 1400m on July 22, when she sustained a wide run to salute comfortably at an each-way price.

The daughter of Ace High then stepped to a mile at Caulfield on August 8 and was wide throughout, but she seems to enjoy that galloping room and kept surging for second.

That performance suggests the extra 200m won't worry her, while she drops to 53.5kg. Lightly raced and with upside, she looks ready to peak and finds the right race to bring up a Saturday win.

8. Federer remains lightly raced for a six-year-old. Jameka's boy caught the eye from the rear first-up at Sandown before being left too far back here on August 15, again doing his best work late. He drops slightly in trip but looks to be building towards a win.

5. Hurry Curry had a hidden run first-up at Flemington, settling at the rear and being held up at key stages before working home well. The rise in distance suits, as does the drop in grade, while the Danny O'Brien stable is flying. 15. Blue Willow is no world-beater but is hard-fit, honest and down in the weights.

Race 3 - 1:10PM Brad Masters Plumbing Handicap Tips (2000m)

10. Darkbonee landed the cash for us in his BM100 second-up attempt at Caulfield on August 15 when taking out the finale. He was suited at the weights, but still came from off midfield to roll some classy types in a race otherwise dominated on speed.

The 2000m shouldn't trouble him with a good platform underneath him, and he also showed his Soft-track credentials a fortnight ago. An upgrade or two from the current Soft 7 would be no concern.

Still very progressive, he's never finished outside the money and is tactically versatile, giving Jamie Melham plenty of options from barrier five.

Hard not to love the August 8 return from 8. Litzdeel. It was a brave on-speed performance in a race that set up for the swoopers, and she kept whacking away honestly. She strips fitter and improved sharply second-up last campaign over this distance before being Listed placed over further.

2. Saint George has to give plenty of weight to the top two, but must be respected on class after a comfortable Flemington second-up win on July 18. 14. Shockletz is also in the mix after having excuses on June 6 before a freshen-up and working home okay on August 1.

Race 4 - 1:45PM Hygain Handicap Tips (1400m)

It's a really tough BM84 to assess, made harder by the favourite being third emergency 19. Cruiserweight, who was scratched at the barriers at Sandown last Saturday. He needs three scratchings to make the field.

Each-way odds are available for 2. Home Rule, who needed his fresh outing at Flemington before improving sharply over this track-and-trip a fortnight ago, only finding Ten Commandments better late.

The Warrnambool-based veteran has only finished outside the quinella once over the Caulfield 1400m. He won over this track-and-trip last winter and again got on the board here in August, then was well beaten in second to Sepals, who was a Group 1 winner at his next start.

13. Itazura brings a strong form reference after getting the better of Darkbonee in his August 1 return at Flemington. That form was franked by the runner-up in better company, while his only previous victory came second-up last preparation. He was also Group 2 placed over 1800m here in February.

On talent, 8. Asakura could have these covered and getting to 1400m is a big tick. His most recent attempt at this trip produced a Group 3 placing behind Sixties, although he has to overcome a horror draw second-up.

Race 5 - 2:20PM HKJC World Pool Courtza Stakes Tips (1200m)

It's a competitive race with good speed up front, which could play into the hands of 10. Gold Medallist. The Moody and Coleman-trained mare resumes here after impressing late through the line in an August 11 Pakenham jump-out.

She was unbeaten in four runs through her first campaign, quickly working through the grades and completing the four-peat in a metro BM70.

Her only poor run came fresh at Sale in February, but she quickly bounced back and later saluted at Caulfield. The autumn form was over further, but fresh at 1200m is fine and she could produce a big late finish.

6. Shadhavar is the starting point after rounding out autumn with back-to-back wins, including an all-the-way Listed success at Morphettville, before taking care of a Regal Roller field on August 15. She rises three kilos but will make her own luck.

2. Salty Pearl has moved well in two Cranbourne jump-outs and is such a consistent type. A mile is probably her preferred range, but she was only beaten a length over this track-and-trip fresh earlier this year. 8. Betwitchery had excuses second-up when covering ground and could improve sharply at long odds with a softer run.

Race 6 - 2:55PM The Quayclean Heath 1100 Tips (1100m)

3. Oliveanotherday is one of the more interesting runners resuming on the program and among Victoria's more exciting up-and-coming sprinters, although this is his sternest challenge yet.

He showed raw ability in his first campaign before taking another step over late summer and autumn, winning all four starts. Tom Dabernig spaced his runs nicely, worked through the grades and opted against the Group 1 Goodwood.

Instead, he went to Warrnambool and gave some seasoned types a galloping lesson on testing ground. Two August jump-out wins suggest he's returned in good order, while barrier one suits his tactical versatility and he could make a statement here.

9. Bridal Waltz has to be in calculations after last being seen winning the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide. That followed a good effort without luck in The Galaxy, while she has since won a Pakenham jump-out. Ben Melham stays aboard and has ridden her in her past three wins.

1. War Machine is harder to assess after offering little since winning the Gilgai Stakes last October, although his jump-out work has been encouraging, completing another after the Bletchingly scratching. 8. Inkaruna also goes into the numbers, a track-and-trip winner last November who was very unlucky in second when resuming in March.

Race 7 - 3:30PM ive > McNeil Stakes Tips (1200m)

The McNeil Stakes and these early-season three-year-old features are always worth following as form references. The last decade has seen several smart winners, including Merchant Navy, Super Seth, Jacquinot and Veight, who all went on to Group 1 success.

Heading an open early market is impressive Sandown debut winner 9. American Eagle. He did plenty wrong in that July 15 success but dug deep to score over Judas Tree, who franked the form at Sandown last Saturday.

American Eagle has since completed a tick-over jump-out at Caulfield Heath and should have natural improvement to come from that first race-day showing. Mark Zahra takes the reins, with the big-race rider striking at 28.6% when combining with the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable over the past 12 months.

1. Seize The Day is an intriguing colt after showing plenty of class through two March victories in New Zealand before being spelled. His August jump-outs suggested he might need the fresh run, so the market could be the best guide.

10. Aethera has completed two August jump-outs, the latest in a hot heat featuring Yellow Jersey, Mr Brightside and Giga Kick. She bolted in on debut before a break and comes from the in-form Danny O'Brien stable. 5. Confederation should also improve from his August 15 return, with James McDonald back aboard, and the penny hasn't dropped with this colt.

Race 8 - 4:10PM Stow Storage Memsie Stakes Tips (1400m)

This shapes as a very competitive Memsie Stakes, with 7. Cosmic Crusader perhaps the safest option given he arrives hard-fit, in form and unbeaten at Caulfield.

He maintained that perfect track record when winning the P.B. Lawrence Stakes, coming from off the speed in a race otherwise dominated on pace. He's also unbeaten on Soft tracks, while his versatility has been a feature throughout this preparation.

The main query is staying at 1400m as he looks to be tracking towards longer trips, but he is flying and has shown enough tactical versatility to remain effective here. The wide draw may not be the worst place to be by this stage of the program either.

5. Angel Capital could well have been set for this with a run now under his belt and a return to his preferred Caulfield 1400m. His Missile Stakes return over 1200m effectively served as a trial, while there were also genuine excuses at his previous 1400m attempt in the All Aged Stakes when held up.

Second-up last spring, Angel Capital was unlucky not to win the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over this track-and-trip before dropping to 1200m and recording the fastest closing sectionals of The Everest. Ben Melham gets back aboard and has ridden him in three of his five career wins.

4. Buckaroo is another who appeals at longer odds given his strong Caulfield record and proven ability fresh over 1400m. His past two first-up runs have both produced Group 1 placings over this trip, including third in last year's Memsie Stakes.

Two Sydney trials followed by a Flemington jump-out win on August 21 have given Buckaroo a solid grounding, while Jye McNeil has ridden him in his past two first-up outings.

Chances don't end there. 2. Jimmysstar is dangerous fresh after looking sharp in two Sydney trials, while 8. Sabaj brings plenty of X-factor into his five-year-old season.

Race 9 - 4:45PM Chandon Heatherlie Stakes Tips (1700m)

Lightly raced import 10. Yellow Jersey made his Australian debut on Stradbroke Handicap Day in the Listed Wayne Wilson as a drifting favourite. He appeared to have every chance, but War Eternal proved too tough.

That veteran was hard-fit and in career-best form, while Yellow Jersey was subsequently freshened and trialled well on July 31.

The five-year-old then headed south and narrowly won a 1000m Caulfield heat on August 15, with Mr Brightside, Giga Kick and Tom Kitten among those behind him. This looks an ideal first-up assignment, particularly with several of the proven class runners not especially well suited, while his European form through globetrotting star Dubai Honour adds further substance to his profile.

The knock on 3. Kingswood is the draw, but he's one of the runners who looks most forward from the trials. He was third in a heat won by Sheza Alibi on August 11 and has two wins and two seconds from six fresh attempts.

6. Wootton Verni's P.B. Lawrence return was better than it reads, with 1400m always short of his best. The extra 300m is favourable and his only previous Caulfield appearance resulted in a Group 3 victory. 9. Just Folk might get control from barrier two under Blake Shinn and, with race fitness, could make this a genuine test for the chasers.

Race 10 - 5:20PM Evergreen Turf Handicap Tips (1400m)

Hard to know what to make of 11. Sass Appeal's return win. She made it five from six on August 1, but was gifted a soft lead with just 51.5kg and was entitled to get the job done.

Still, it was first-up and she's been targeted at some Group 1 races early in spring, so there should be improvement to come. A tick-over trial on August 19 was encouraging.

She'll face more pressure this time, but brings a perfect 1400m record. The main query is that she's never seen a wet track, so an upgrade or two would be beneficial. We'll get a better gauge on her ceiling this Saturday.

While he's more effective at Flemington, 1400m is also the sweet spot for 2. Cafe Millenium. He was kept around this trip last campaign for the Hayes yard and the wide gate suits his pattern, allowing him to settle off the speed and find galloping room.

1. Another Wil is a Group 1 winner over this track-and-trip and brings a good fresh record, while there was merit to his first two Brisbane winter efforts. Respecting 15. Grecian Destiny at a huge price. No intent on Australian debut, he was then spelled and gelded, with two winter trials completed, the latest a close second to Buccleuch, who bolted in last Saturday.
