Morphettville Value Bet - Race 1 No. 5 The Muscle

There is clearly a decent opinion of The Muscle, although punters and connections have done their money twice now after he was well backed in both career starts.

The Justin Pickering-trained gelding was very green and raced wide on debut at Balaklava on July 26, yet still stuck on reasonably well for fourth despite looking as though he had plenty to learn.

The penny had not completely dropped when he was a heavily backed equal favourite at Mount Gambier second-up, but he did more right and there was plenty of merit in the runner-up performance after he was caught in an early speed battle and remained clearly the pick of the on-speed brigade.

That race was set up perfectly for swooper Hellfire Jess, who arrived off runs in a Group 3 and a South Australian Magic Millions feature, while the maiden itself was run almost three lengths faster than the benchmark event on the same program.

The Muscle now has another run under his belt and should continue to improve, giving him every chance to measure up in metropolitan maiden company against his own age.

Morphettville Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 7 Extremely Rowdy

A long drought ended for Extremely Rowdy at Morphettville on August 8 when she recorded the third win of her career and her first since November 2023.

She has not been heavily raced in the period since and, as is often the case with horses who regain confidence after a lengthy run of outs, there is every chance she can go on with it in a race that does not look significantly stronger.

The mare rises only half a kilogram from that second-up victory and should be capable of at least holding her form as she continues to build fitness following an extended break.

The daughter of Extreme Choice now gets back to 1200m, which suits on prior form given her first two career victories both came over this distance.

Noel Callow retains the ride and Extremely Rowdy looks well placed to complete the double, although Common Interest is respected as a talented but still raw type who is worth keeping safe.

Urban Environs Group Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Morphettville Best Bet - Race 7 No. 9 The Cosmic One

Travis Doudle looks to have a progressive galloper on his hands in The Cosmic One, who has won four of six career starts and enters this off back-to-back victories.

We were with him at an each-way quote when he saluted on August 1, before he handled a rise in grade a fortnight later in a win that was better than the narrow margin suggests.

He raced wide and keenly throughout that latest success and still found enough late to hold on, which points to further upside even though this is a sharper rise in grade.

The Cosmic One has a favourable weight edge on the class runner Mating Call, while Cash is another key rival but resumes from a wide draw, leaving the race shape looking suitable for the fitter selection.

With 4.5kg less than he carried on August 15 and barrier three giving Ben Price the chance to control proceedings in a race lacking obvious pressure, The Cosmic One looks well placed to continue his winning run.

Morphettville Roughie - Race 8 No. 12 Spangled Sipper

Spangled Sipper is building nicely into her preparation and now gets to 1800m fourth-up in a race that looks within reach at a double-figure quote.

There has been merit in all three winter runs, beginning with a closing seventh-of-12 from the rear over 1400m before she stepped to the mile and placed at Murray Bridge.

She hit a flat spot at Morphettville last time and was unable to quicken into the faster lanes when required, but still picked up again late in an effort that suggested the extra distance would suit.

The back end of her previous preparation also supports the rise in trip, having placed over 1960m before stretching to 2150m at Oakbank ahead of a spell.

This is slightly weaker than the company she faced last start and, with a solid fitness base and the possibility that the wider lanes are advantageous late in the day, Spangled Sipper has each-way appeal in the penultimate.
