King Charles III Stakes History

The George Main Stakes was one of Sydney’s premier weight-for-age mile races held at Royal Randwick. The race is named after George Main, a former chairman of the AJC.

In 1979 the race was given Group One status where some of Australia’s best ever horses have competed in the grand event.

The winner of the George Main was exempt from ballot for the Group One Epsom Handicap, but now the race takes place after that.

Champion mare Winx is the only winner of the race to have won three in succession.

Other noted gallopers to take out the Group One mile are super mare More Joyous, champion Lonhro and one of the best ever in Kingston Town.

In 2023, the race was renamed as the King Charles III Stakes and switched to a later date in the spring.
