The $5 million King Charles III Stakes headlines Saturday's Randwick meeting, with a small but select field of six runners tackling 1600m at weight-for-age in the Group 1 feature.

First contested in 2023, the race has quickly become a major part of Sydney's spring carnival, with Ceolwulf winning the past two editions and now chasing a historic hat-trick against unbeaten-this-preparation superstar Autumn Glow and multiple Group 1 winner Pride Of Jenni.

Autumn Glow is the commanding $1.45 favourite with Picklebet for the 2026 King Charles III Stakes.

2026 King Charles III Stakes Best Bet - Autumn Glow

A disappointing turnout for the $5 million King Charles III Stakes, perhaps further evidence that these horses should be in Melbourne at this time of year rather than making two jurisdictions worse off, something last Saturday's Rosehill meeting did a good job of highlighting, but that's an argument for another day.

The early market looks about right, with Autumn Glow a deserving favourite after establishing herself as one of the most professional and consistent gallopers we've seen in recent years. Her only defeat in 14 starts came when stretched to 2000m in a strongly run Queen Elizabeth Stakes to round out her previous preparation, and while she may tackle that distance again, there's little doubt she's at her most effective between 1400m and 1600m.

The Chris Waller-trained superstar has returned with two impressive victories this spring, accounting for Sheza Alibi in the Winx Stakes first-up before taking out The 7 Stakes over the Randwick mile, where she again proved too strong for Ceolwulf. Her tactical versatility is another asset, and there's little reason to expect anything other than another strong performance.

Ceolwulf is chasing a third consecutive King Charles III Stakes victory, and while the return of blinkers could spark improvement, he's been safely held in his previous clashes with Autumn Glow. The stronger tempo provided by Pride Of Jenni could bring him into the race, particularly given how effective that scenario has proven for him in the past.

Pride Of Jenni should ensure a genuinely run mile, and the veteran mare is difficult to knock following another impressive Feehan Stakes victory at Caulfield. She's proven capable of producing her best when allowed to establish a big lead, although this is a considerably tougher assignment against the country's leading milers.

The remaining runners are deservedly at big odds, with Just Folk and Militarize both effective on rain-affected ground but lacking the class of the leading trio. God's Window looks the most interesting option for the exotics after landing the cash for us at a big price in the Epsom Handicap, where he scored comfortably second-up. He's an underrated performer who handles testing conditions, although the switch from handicap company to weight-for-age leaves him considerably worse treated against Ceolwulf.

There may be some value in quinellas and trifectas with God's Window, but it's difficult to make a compelling case against Autumn Glow. There are no great prizes for finding the favourite at such a short quote, although the market appears to have this race about right, and she's clearly the one to beat.
