Sir Delius, trained by Waterhouse and Bott, has become the $3.40 favorite for the 2026 Cox Plate after a dominant performance in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The horse has overcome previous setbacks, such as being withdrawn from the 2025 Spring Carnival, to establish itself as Australia’s leading 2000m performer. Other notable contenders include Aeliana and Calandagan, both at $4.60 odds, while Sheza Alibi and Autumn Glow are less favored at $8. The Cox Plate, historically held at Moonee Valley, will be at Flemington due to redevelopment.

Following a dominant victory in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Sir Delius has surged to the top of Cox Plate markets, with the Waterhouse and Bott-trained import now a $3.40 favourite with EliteBet for the 2026 feature.

Veterinary scans forced connections to remove him from the 2025 Spring Carnival after a Turnbull Stakes victory, with the entire strongly fancied for both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup last spring.

He has since reinforced his position as Australia’s premier 2000m performer with that commanding display on Day Two of The Championships at Randwick.

Aeliana ($4.60) bounced back to the winner’s stall with victory in the Ramvet Stakes on Golden Slipper Day and backed up seven days later with a success over 2400m in the Tancred Stakes.

While her 2025 spring campaign tapered off, including a sixth-of-eight finish in the Cox Plate, she had opened the preparation with Group 1 placings in both the Winx Stakes and Makybe Diva Stakes.

Calandagan ($4.60) also sits on the second line of betting, with the French-trained gelding bringing elite international form after his breakthrough win in the 2025 Japan Cup, where he snapped a two-decade drought for overseas runners in the race.

The world’s highest-rated horse further enhanced that profile with a Group 1 victory in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in March, producing a strong late surge to overhaul his rivals.

Two of the more exciting gallopers in Australia are Sheza Alibi and Autumn Glow (both $11), although it remains to be seen whether either will be tested over 2000m this spring.

Cox Plate Winners

The Cox Plate is without question the greatest two minutes in Australian racing, a 2040m weight-for-age contest traditionally staged at the cauldron of Moonee Valley. With the track undergoing redevelopment, the 2026 edition will instead be held at Flemington.

Inaugurated in 1922 when Tangalooma claimed the first running, it’s a genuine who’s who of racing that has captured the event since.

The champions list includes the likes of four-time winner Winx, three-time winner Kingston Town, star galloper Northerly and the inimitable Phar Lap.

Romantic Warrior (2023) and Via Sistina (2024 and 2025) have claimed the last three editions of the W.S. Cox Plate.
