Run as originally the Queen's Plate and then the AJC Plate, this race was rebranded as the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1954.

Distances have varied for this feature over history where it was 4800 metres and 3600 metres staying race in early years but was reduced in trip with the Sydney Cup becoming more prevalent and since 1986, has been run over 2000 metres.

Carbine and Tulloch were famous winners of this event in earlier years whilst more modern champions include Jeune, Might And Power and most recently Winx who won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes three years in a row (2017 - 2019).
