Randwick Tips April 12
Race 1 - 11:45AM HKJC World Pool Fernhill Mile Tips (1600m)
Best: 1. Tupakara. Now with a few runs under her belt, it's somewhat of a D-Day for Tupakara, who didn't appear to relish heavy ground in the Baillieu.
Prior to that, she sat wide and gave Tempted a drag in to win the Reisling Stakes (first and third in the Golden Slipper were produced from that race).
This could be a handy form race, with Broadsiding, Tom Kitten, Converge, Prize Icon and Dear Demi (Group 1 winners) all past winners of this event.
Value: 5. Spicy Lu. While it was only a Cowra maiden, it was an arrogant debut win from Spicy Lu, where the filly bolted in despite covering ground.
She backed that first outing up with an Albury Class 1 triumph over Rose Aye, who arrived to that event off a narrow defeat behind Istolea Magic.
Istolea Magic was a big Provincial winner last Saturday, while her March metro form ties in through Brigidine Gal (twice Group 3 placed last month).
Race 2 - 12:20PM Bisley Workwear South Pacific Classic Tips (1400m)
Best: 11. Meridiana. She survived a slight betting drift and landed the money for us when recording a stylish debut victory at Randwick-Kensington.
Meridiana made light work of Fleeting Spirit (won her next start), while Full Hao (very smart winner on Wednesday) has also franked that form.
The daughter of Preferment could be a QLD Oaks filly in winter, but she's still sharp and classy enough to measure in what isn't a strong black-type race.
Value: 6. Pleasure Artist. The market drift ahead of her Newcastle return was a worry and Pleasure Artist only battled in a leader-dominated affair.
There should be improvement from that March 20 effort, with the three-year-old resuming off a first prep that culminated in two Group 1 attempts.
Her start three run when getting home well behind Swiftfalcon would have Pleasure Artist right in this and she get blinkers applied for the first time.
Race 3 - 12:55PM Polytrack Provincial-Midway Final Tips (1400m)
Best: 2. Lord Of Biscay. There's only been 10 editions of the Provincial Final and Kris Lees has prepared five of the winners (has three runners in this field).
J-Mac, Australian Bloodstock and Kris Lees teamed up with Spangler to win the 2023 Provincial and that trio come together with Lord Biscay.
Despite covering ground, he finished next to Matcha Latte (equal fav) last start and in an April 2 trial, Lord Biscay was particularly strong past the line.
Value: 10. Vintage Choice. You could mark him a little shorter off current form, with the gelding arriving to this feature off a pair of seconds.
The first-up run through Tenderize has stood up and in the Kembla Grange Qualifier won by Imposant, Vintage Choice's performance was full of merit.
After working early to take the lead, Vintage Choice was the only on-speed survivor and a progressive Flying Bandit franked that form on Wednesday.
Race 4 - 1:30PM The Star Percy Sykes Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 5. Inkaruna. A low draw gives Inkaruna a chance to turn the tables on Tempted from their Reisling Stakes clash and the fav has drawn out here.
Also, Inkaruna should be less banged up than Within The Law and Tempted, who are both deep into their campaigns and coming off a Grand Final.
Her prep has been spaced and along with having last start experience in a fast-run race, Inkaruna has improved if the March 28 trial is any indication.
Value: 6. Recuperato. This is a harder ask, however, it's well worth a shot at the stumps for Recuperato, who is improving with every race start.
The Victorian still did a bit wrong at Sandown despite progressing from her debut attempt and it all came together last time out in the Breeders Stakes.
Recuperato produced a turn-of-foot when pouncing from off the speed in a muddling affair at Flemington and Ben Melham stays aboard for the Percy Sykes.
Race 5 - 2:05PM Arrowfield 3yo Sprint Tips (1200m)
Best: 8. Autumn Glow. The premier three-year-old sprint of the Sydney Autumn Carnival has Autumn Glow has a very short market elect ($1.40.$1.50).
This race has an outstanding honour roll, with past winners that include Lonhro, Exceed And Excel, Dance Hero, Shoot Out, Catchy, Classique Legend and Mazu.
Joliestar showed her sprinting prowess when winning the 2024 edition and Autumn Glow could have a higher ceiling than that dual Group 1 winner.
Value: 6. Big Swinger. This Victorian visitor isn't short on ability and that was evident early when opening his account with back-to-back wins ay Ballarat.
While he was a little flat at start three as a beaten fav, Big Swinger was at the end of his prep in that Melbourne Cup Day appearance from Flemington.
Big Swinger arrives off a soft fresh win at Pakenham (fastest last 600m, 400m and 200m of the card) and Attain (runner-up) has won either side of that.
Race 6 - 2:40PM Asahi Super Dry Australian Oaks Tips (2400m)
Best: 2. Treasurethe Moment. The Matt Laurie-trained galloper is aiming to become the 16th filly to complete a VRC Oaks/Australian Oaks double, with Serenade Rose the last to complete this back in 2005/2006.
While she may be more dynamic in the 1600m-2000m range, especially going when looking ahead to next season, her first Group 1 victory was recorded over 2500m in the VRC Oaks.
With her first clockwise run completed in the Vinery Stud Stakes, there still could be improvement to come with Treasurethe Moment, who also ticked the wet track box last start.
Next Best: 4. Verona Rose. She won her first three starts and then behind Treasurethe Moment, the daughter of Castelvecchio was the pick of the chasers in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes.
We're seeing the Castelvecchio progeny come into their own as the distances increase and that was on display last Saturday via Aeliana's impressive victory in the Australian Derby.
Verona Rose is by Castelvecchio and out of a Mafki mare (Makfi produced two Australian Oaks winners), while she's also from the same family as Manighar (three-time Group 1 winning stayer).
Value: 8. Miss Alexis. Miss Alexis is coming of the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes, which produced last year's Australian Oaks winner (Autumn Angel) and not much went her way via that 2000m lead-up.
The Ciaron Maher-trained filly was set a big task in last Saturday's attempt where she settled back early and after finding some trouble early in the run home, Miss Alexis let down nicely.
This daughter of Dundeel is the third foal out of Jameka, who won the 2015 VRC Oaks before recording major triumphs in her four-year-old season when taking out Caulfield Cup and Tancred Stakes.
Race 7 - 3:15PM Schweppes Sydney Cup Tips (3200m)
Best: 8. Alalcance. She completed a winning hat-trick on the opening day of The Championships last Saturday and for the 2025 Sydney Cup, she drops 4.5kg from her Chairman's Quality triumph.
15 of the last 30 Sydney Cup winners have been produced from the Chairman's Quality (2600m), which includes Circle Of Fire, who completed the winning double last year.
Alalcance still needs to tick the 3200m box, although there's plenty of staying pedigree on her page and with an ideal platform, she gets her chance in what's a thin edition of the Sydney Cup.
Next Best: 4. Circle Of Fire. Ciaron Maher has prepared three of the last five Sydney Cup winners and the gun trainer has Circle Of Fire, who won last year's Sydney Cup despite covering ground.
The five-year-old was building nicely ahead of his Chairman's Quality/Sydney Cup double in 2024 and after his Group 1 win, he was leading the futures market for the 2024 Melbourne Cup.
Without kicking the door down, the son of Almanzor has been ticking over fairly ahead his Sydney Cup defence and the last start WFA effort in the Tancred Stakes was a pass mark.
Value: 18. Strathtay. Strathtay was consistent over a long first campaign for Chris Waller, which culminated in two stakes placings over 2400m before a sixth-place finish in the Group 1 Metropolitan.
He recorded the fastest last 200m of the Chairman's Quality and he was also an eye-catcher prior to that when third in the Manion Cup (fastest last 800m/600m/400m and 200m of the race).
Jay Ford combined with Chris Waller to win the 2019 Sydney Cup with Sharaaoh and in the last 10 years, only one horse has carried more than 52.5kg to win this race (Strathtay has 50kg).
Race 8 - 3:55PM Queen Elizabeth Stakes Tips (2000m)
Best: 12. Via Sistina. The Chris Waller-trained import has won seven Group 1's from 10 starts (two this prep) in Australia and the seven-year-old found career best form at the back-end of the 2024 Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Via Sistina wasn't able to get a fast tempo via her recent Ranvet Stakes triumph and there should be more pressure in this 2000m WFA feature, which is her target assignment for the autumn.
A strong field has been assembled and as a result, we can hopefully get a better price closer to the jump for Via Sistina, but she's still comfortably the top seed in the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Next Best: 2. Rousham Park. This Japanese visitor is a Group 3 winner over this distance, while the six-year-old has also placed twice at Group 1 level since an eighth-of-eleven finish when contesting he 2023 Hong Kong Cup.
His last Group 1 placing was a second in the Breeders' Cup Turf in November and Rousham Park was only a few strides off nabbing Rebel's Romance (seven-time Group 1 winner) in that event.
French-born jockey Christophe Lemaire travels over for this key engagement and he has a great rapport with Rousham Park, with four wins and three placings recorded from seven rides.
Value: 7. Buckaroo. Buckaroo has been very consistent since being gelded, with back-to-back wins before a narrow defeat behind Via Sistina and he contested the Cups after the Turnbull Stakes.
I loved his lead-up work ahead of his George Ryder Stakes return, which was effectively another trial, as there was no intent early and he held-up/in restricted room from the 200m.
His work late was still strong (third-fastest last 400m of the Golden Slipper Day card) and with a April 4 tick-over trial completed, Buckaroo steps up to a more suitable distance here.
Race 9 - 4:35PM TAB Queen Of The Turf Stakes Tips (1600m)
Best: 1. Fangirl. Chris Waller has prepared the last two winners of the Queen of the Turf Stakes and he's got a strong hand for the hat-trick bid, with Fangirl, Atishu and Lazzura his three representatives.
Fangirl is the one to beat, especially if the track doesn't get testing (forecast looks okay) and the six-year-old is looking to bounce back after covering ground in the George Ryder Stakes.
A return to Randwick suits the daughter of Sebring, as seven of her 10 career victories have come at this track and two of her Group 1 triumphs have been recorded over the Randwick mile.
Next Best: 4. Amelia's Jewel. I don't mind the little gap between runs for Amelia's Jewel, who is better suited here at WFA level after giving weight to all of her rivals when contesting the Coolmore Classic second-up.
Also, she was in the worst ground via that March 15 program from Rosehill, and no rivals inside and/or behind of Amelia's Jewel went close to going past her in that 1500m feature.
While Fangirl turned the tables in Melbourne, Amelia's Jewel beat Fangirl home via their last clash over this track/trip and the five-year-old was third-up in that King Charles III Stakes tilt.
Value: 7. Coeur Volante. Blinkers going on for the Mannerism Stakes sparked the four-year-old up, with the daughter of Proisir recording a dominant four-length win at Caulfield before heading to Sydney.
That performance warranted a Coolmore Classic shot and while she was well beaten in that 1500m Group 1, it's worth noting that she was in the quicksand (inside) on that card.
March 15 was also a very warm day and the Victorian was worked up pre-race as a result, but her Emancipation Stakes effort suggests that Coeur Volante could be back on track.
Race 10 - 5:10PM Cincotta Chemist Sapphire Stakes Tips (1200m)
Best: 5. Commemorative. A low draw was her undoing in The Galaxy, as this big Godolphin mare needs room and she didn't get any in that Group 1.
Commemorative was crowded and checked at the 250m (held-up until the 100m), so it was a complete forgive and she's now suited drawn out at Randwick.
Briasa won the TJ Smith Stakes after an unlucky Galaxy effort and while she needs to bounce back after being knocked around, she brings the best form.
Value: 10. Infancy. This Australian Bloodstock sprinter is a forgotten runner in early markets despite recording a stakes win at Randwick last autumn.
Infancy should've won again in the PJ Bell Stakes, where she was unlucky in second and the mare was in the worst going fresh last prep over this track/trip.
She didn't win last time in, but Infancy was still competitive and off their Toy Show clash, she shouldn't be $40+ vs Commemorative and Lady Laguna.
