Bendigo Tips April 12

Race 1 - 12:05PM Off The Track BM78 Handicap Tips (2400m)

Best: 4. Steel Run. He was the pick of the backmarkers on return, with the fastest last 800m/600m/400m and 200m of a Flemington BM84.

That March 1 event was won by a smart Revelare, while the runner-up and fourth-placegetter from that race have subsequently won at metro level.

With Steel Run unsuited by the track pattern and a shocking surface second-up, I'm happy to forgive the last start performance at Moonee Valley.

Value: 6. St Vincents Garden. Nothing went right in his Ballarat resumption, were St Vincents covered ground when off the speed in a slowly run race.

While he was outsprinted, that fresh run was still a pass mark and getting out to 2400m is a positive here (only overseas win was over this trip).

The son of Camelot showed enough on Australian debut in QLD last winter south and he was stakes placed in Ireland when prepared by Joseph O'Brien.

Race 2 - 12:35PM Apiam Animal Health VOBIS Gold Rush Tips (1100m)

Best: 3. Killiana. The Hayes brothers are arguably the best two-year-old trainers in Victoria and Killiana was a slick debut winner at Bendigo last month.

Six furlongs just saw her out as a well-backed fav in The Showdown, but she still wasn't disgraced and the filly moved well in a recent jump-out.

The Hayes yard won this race last year with Bold Bastille, who was deep into her second prep and back in trip via an easier race sees Killiana well placed.

Value: 5. Meisho. She brings decent juvenile form her first prep, which culminated with a second to Shining Smile (won her next three at Listed level).

The Maribynong Plate references through Tycoon Star, Bacash, Price Tag and Military Tycoon also reads well and she's completed two March jump-out's.

Meisho has won both Cranbourne heats leading into this return and the latest on March 31 was the second-fastest 800m jump-out of the morning.

Race 3 - 1:10PM Balgownie Bendigo BM70 Handicap Tips (1300m)

Best: 3. Otago. I'm not sure what to expect first-up with Otago, as he's been off the scene since a midfield finish in last year's Australian Guineas.

He looked at least stakes class over his first prep, which opened with a big debut win over this track/trip (form through the placegetters has stood up).

Both of his March jump-out's have been okay (quiet) and in a BM70 lineup that has a decent tail, it'll be interesting to see what the market does late.

Value: 19. Dramaticus. Another debut winner over the Bendigo 1300m was Dramaticus and he was then a little plain when contesting a Geelong BM64.

The four-year-old bounced back at start three when holding off the challenge of Kings Valley and that runner-up has since won three metro races.

Dramaticus appears forward going off his lead-up work, with a decent hit-out behind Sans Doute and he was looked after late via his last jump-out.

Race 4 - 1:45PM Carlton Draught BM74 Handicap Tips (1600m)

Best: 1. Prince Eric. Prince Eric has been competitive in all four Australian runs under Archie Alexander and he's been single figure odds every time.

The four-year-old is now a double figure quote despite finding his easiest assignment Down Under, albeit he needs to overcome a wide draw here.

First-up, he ran the fastest last 800m/600m and 400m of the Echuca Cup, and that form suggests that a BM74 should be well within reach.
Value: 9. Flossing. We were with this veteran at 70/1 on Mornington Cup Day a few years ago, where he finished third after briefly looking the winner.

Flossing has to be respected in this grade and the son of Tavistock generally comes to hand early (two wins and two thirds from six first-up runs).

He saluted in stronger grade over this distance when resuming last year and the seven-year-old arrives off two good jump-out's at Cranbourne.

Race 5 - 2:20PM Bendigo Mazda 3YO Handicap Tips (1100m)

Best: 3. Sweethearted. After opening his first prep with a pair of seconds, Sweethearted recorded back-to-back victories before being tipped out.

Via his March 29 return, the three-year-old couldn't have done much more when coming from off the speed and working home in the inferior lanes.

Sweethearted ran the fastest last 400m of the entire Australian Cup Day program and he's now well placed back to handicap conditions second-up.

Value: 13. Scampi. Off some impressive lead-up work, he was spruiked as an early two-year-old, although that talent never transferred to race day.

Scampi was gelded ahead of his March 21 return and the Ciaron Maher-trained galloper got the kill that he needed (fastest closing splits of the card).

Now he's a few stones lighter, Scampi could be ready to progress and there's easier options if they wanted to work through the grades with a low rating.

Race 6 - 2:55PM Bendigo Advertiser BM84 Handicap Tips (1100m)

Best: 3. Tatsumaki. It was excellent training effort to have him saluting on Australian debut, where he was first-up off a three and a half year absence.

Being out fast and coming home quick are the traits of a quality sprinter, while the rest of the on-speed brigade in that Caulfield event were well beaten.

Tatsumaki was entitled to knock up late, especially given the long layoff, while Heart Of Glass franked that form when going one better last Saturday.
Value: 9. Atlantic Spirit. She landed a blowout result on this card last year when saluting at 60/1 and that race produced a Group 1 winner (Skybird).

Atlantic Spirit backed that up with a fourth at Group 3 level before finishing down the track at Flemington and she didn't come up via short spring prep.

She's back on track, with a fresh win (should've won by further) prior to an unlucky second behind Codigo, who won his next start at Flemington.

Race 7 - 3:35PM Catanach’s Jewellers Bendigo Gold Bracelet Tips (1400m)

Best: 1. Wings Of Song. With eight victories (four black-type) and four placings from 16 starts, Wings Of Song has put together a very handy record.

She was underrated going into her last fresh attempt on Cranbourne Cup Day in November, where the four-year-old got the cash for us at big odds.

Wings Of Song then lost a close duel to Marble Arch, who went on to push Duke De Sessa before giving two Group 1 winners a touch up in the Blamey.

Value: 7. Poifect. 1100m was too sharp at Flemington, however, the market push ($21-$16) was no surprise, given she was a stakes winner in a BM78.

Poifect lacked the change up speed over that distance to chime in when she needed to, but with seven furlongs in mind, her late work was sound.

She's dangerous when right, with Poifect saluting second-up over this journey last autumn before recording a big win in the Adelaide Guineas.

Race 8 - 4:15PM RSN Bendigo Guineas Tips (1400m)

Best: 3. Wonder Boy. This Jerome Hunter-trained galloper is well overdue and his recent Sydney form should be holding up in the Bendigo Guineas.

Wonder Boy split Lazzura and Declichy Boulevard in the Phar Lap Stakes, with that pair both placing at Group level via their next appearances.

Prior to the Rosehill tilt, Wonder Boy should've taken out a BM84 at Flemington and that winner (Enxuto) won an open handicap at his next start.
Value: 7. Somewhere. It was hard not to be impressed with the debut victory, where he settled back in a field of nine before rattling home.

Somewhere was then thrown in the deep end when contesting the Sandown Guineas and he arguably should've won that (held-up at key stages).

He ran the fastest last 200m of that Group 2 feature and he's completed two autumn jump-out's (I wanted to see more in the latest, but still fair).

Race 9 - 4:50PM bet365 Golden Mile Tips (1600m)

Best: 16. Euphoric. The Golden Mile is arguably the most open race on the program, where a case can be made for most of these contenders.

Euphoric is one of the outsiders of the field, however, he's more than capable of measuring up here (unlucky as a $6 chance in this race last year).

His build up has been fine (fastest last 200m of a BM84 second-up) and the gap between runs isn't a knock (all four wins been first-up or off a freshen-up).

Value: 9. Rumbled Again. This seven-year-old always takes a few runs to hit her straps, with no first or second-up wins and she arrives here third-up.

Despite being well exposed prior to 2024, Rumbled Again was in career best form last year and her highlight came via a Group 3 win in November.

She was unsuited second-up at The Valley when attempting to sustain a wide run from off the speed, but that Sunline Stakes effort was still a pass mark.

Race 10 - 5:25PM Smartloans Bendigo BM84 Handicap Tips (1300m)

Best: 12. Pivot City. The ultimate gear change has done the trick with Pivot City, who got the job done via a narrow fresh victory up the Flemington straight.

While he had to settle for runner-up on March 22, there was more merit the second-up effort (fastest last 800m/600m/400m and 200m of the meeting).

Pivot City was enormous in making ground against the pattern of that Moonee Valley card, while the extra 100m now and a softer draw are both ticks.
Value: 13. Sunshineinmypocket. He opened his account with a hat-trick before a luckless attempt as a well-backed fav in last year's Bendigo Guineas.

Sunshineinmypocket was given time ahead of a January return this year and returned to the winners stall with a fresh victory at Sandown over 1200m.

The gelding failed at Flemington last start (didn't handle a wet track) but Sunshineinmypocket has moved well in a subsequent jump-out.
