Sydney FC vs Adelaide United A-League Round 2 Tips & Prediction

BTTS - Yes is the best bet for Sunday's A-League showdown at Allianz Stadium, with Sydney FC tipped to prevail and central midfielder Rhys Youlley backed in some value player props.

Let's just put last week's Sydney derby firmly in the rear view mirror. Worst game of football I've seen in years. Chalk it as a one-off blip, early-season nerves, dodgy pitch - whatever. I'm moving on and prepared to back Sydney to produce a much better performance here against an Adelaide side who will finally get their A-League campaign up and running on the final day of Round 2.

But the best bet for this one writes itself. Goals are (usually) aplenty in the A-League and both teams have scored in the last 15 meetings between the teams. No need to overthink this one.

And as mentioned, I will believe that Sydney are better for the run and they can catch Adelaide cold at home. The Reds have lost various key figures from last season and the jury is out as to whether they can fill those holes.

I also want to take a stab on Rhys Youlley working the keeper. The 21-year-old showed a willingness to shoot from distance in the derby last week, while a look back at last season shows he attempted 2+ shots in five of his opening eight games. You can get $3.20 for one shot on target, along with $10 for two.
  • BTTS - Yes has landed in the last 15 meetings between the teams
  • BTTS - Yes has landed in nine of Adelaide's last 10 A-League games
  • Adelaide have only won two of their last 14 away games vs Sydney
  • Sydney have won two of their last three home games vs Adelaide
  • Rhys Youlley had two shots last week vs Wanderers & 2+ in five of his opening eight games of last season
  • Three of the last six games between the teams have resulted in a 2-1 score

Sydney FC vs Adelaide United Head To Head

This will be the 65th meeting between the teams. Sydney hold a 28-22 advantage, along with 14 draws.

They've split the last four meetings at two wins apiece, with the Reds prevailing in the last two.

Sydney FC Form Analysis

It was a shocking derby last week to open the season in front of over 30,000 fans.

Nobody could take control and the ball spent the majority of the game either in the air or being banged over the sideline. Aerial ping pong as Sydney ultimately settled for a 0-0 draw and an opening point.

New signing James Overy had a brilliant chance to win the game on debut after being put through on goal by Akol Akon, but he was thwarted by Wanderers' keeper Lawrence Thomas.

The Sky Blues only had one shot on target for the entire game. Thiago Quintal was particularly wasteful and will want an improved performance here.

Sydney FC Team News

Teenage star Akon made a difference when he came on and might be in line for a start here.

Jake Hollman picked up a knock last week and joins Jacob Farrell on the sidelines.

Youngster Mathias Macallister also comes into the squad. Nigerian striker Oriola Sunday was lively on debut and will be hoping for better service in this one.

Sydney FC Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Harrison Devenish-Meares; Rhyan Grant, Alex Popović, Jordan Courtney-Perkins, Ben Garuccio; Rhys Youlley, Wataro Kamijo; Akol Akon, Tiago Quintal, Takahiro Sekine; Oriola Sunday

Adelaide United Form Analysis

It's been a long wait for Adelaide to finally start their A-League season after their Round 1 was postponed due to the club's ACL 2 commitments.

The Reds have made a winning start to the AFC Champions League 2, toppling Tai Po 3-1 and Pathum United 2-1 to top their group after two matches.

It was a successful season for Adelaide last term as they finished in second spot on the ladder, but ultimately they were condemned to another semi-final elimination. The Reds also bombed out of the Australia Cup at the first hurdle to eventual champions South Melbourne.

Adelaide United Team News

Brody Burkitt has big shoes to fill following the departure of Luka Jovanovic to the MLS, while Adelaide will also miss the services of Yaya Dukuly, who signed on with Slovenian champions Celje.

Defender Bart Vriends is sidelined with injury to start the season. Wonderkid Amlani Tatu might have to be content with beginning the season as an impact player off the bench.

Adelaide United Possible Starting XI (4-4-1-1): Joshua Smits; Harry Crawford, Panagiotis Kikianis, Sotiri Phillis, Jay Barnett; Craig Goodwin, Jonny Yull, Anselmo, Ethan Alagich; Juan Muñiz; Brody Burkitt

Verdict

Sydney are backed for all three points at home, with both teams finding the back of the net.
