Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City meet in an exciting A-League Round 2 derby after both teams suffered defeats in their opening matches. The article predicts both teams will score and suggests a draw is likely, as form remains hard to read early in the season. Stats and trends support the likelihood of goals, with Quinn Macnicol and Charles Nduka identified as key attacking threats. Based on recent performances and head-to-head records, a score-draw appears the best value for punters.

Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne City A-League Round 2 Tips & Prediction

Both teams are tipped to score with a draw offering value as Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City clash in a blockbuster derby showdown on Saturday night in Round 2 of the A-League.

Let's just hope this clash is better than the Sydney derby last week.

Both teams come into this encounter following challenging opening fixtures across the ditch last week, with City falling 3-1 to reigning premiers Auckland and Victory falling 2-1 to Wellington.

There's no shame in losing to Auckland away, but Victory's defeat to Phoenix concerns me - the Nix are genuine wooden spoon contenders for me, so that's a poor result, especially one week after losing the Australia Cup Grand Final to a NPL club.

But, there's no better game to bounce back than a derby and I suspect we'll see improvement here - it was a busy seven days for Victory, who had Asian Champions League commitments in-between.

I think both teams score and the draw offers the best value this early into the season, where form remains difficult to read.

City attacking midfielder Quinn Macnicol was highly involved last week, while Charles Nduka remains Victory's most prolific option going forward.
  • BTTS has landed in six of the last nine meetings
  • These teams have drawn five of the last 11 meetings after 90 mins
  • Victory have seen BTTS land in nine of their last 12 A-League games
  • City have seen BTTS land in their last four A-League games
  • Quinn Macnicol has a league-high four shots in R1 last week (scored once, two on target)
  • Charles Nduka has scored five goals in his last 10 A-League games, including last week vs Nix

Melbourne Victory vs Melbourne City Head To Head

This will be the 52nd Melbourne derby in the A-League, with Victory holding a slight 19-16 advantage alongside 16 draws.

Victory have won the last two encounters.

Melbourne Victory Form Analysis

It's been a busy last couple of weeks for Victory.

They were stunned in the Australia Cup final by South Melbourne and have also begun their ACL 2 campaign, drawing with Viettel FC away before a big 3-0 win over FC Seoul last week.

That amount of football so early in the season may have caught up to Victory as they were upstaged 2-1 by Wellington last Sunday at Sky Stadium.

Nduka managed to level the scores after Corban Piper's early opener, but Victory couldn't hold on and as Riley Bidois netted the winner for the Nix with 13 minutes remaining.

Melbourne Victory Team News

Louis D'Arrigo missed last week's season opener due to a hamstring injury.

Melbourne Victory Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): J. Duncan; J. Inserra, P. Ziereis, J. Davidson, F. Mamur; M. Grimaldi, D. Genreau, J. Valadon, C. Santos; G. May, C. Nduka

Melbourne City Form Analysis

It wasn't a great start to the season for City.

Aurellio Vidmar's side made the trip across the Tasman to face reigning premiers Auckland and they were no match for the Black Knights, going down 3-1 in front of 20,000+ fans.

Quinn Macnicol impressed in the No. 10 role and his lively performance was rewarded with the equalising goal in the first half, one of four total shots.

However, City were decidedly second-best and some invididual brilliance from Lachie Bayliss and a late Lachie Brook strike condemned them to an opening defeat.

Melbourne City Team News

Andrew Nabbout was handed the starting striker spot ahead of Max Caputo against Auckland and had a decent game, registering two shots on target. Caputo could slot straight back in for the derby.

Matheus Rossetto (calf), Emiliano Marcondes (ankle), Ben Mazzeo (ankle), Alessandro Lopane (hamstring), and Ryan Kalms (knee) all missed last week's loss with injury.

Melbourne City Possible Starting XI (4-3-3): M. Freke; N. Atkinson, L. Bonetig, H. Delbridge, A. Behich; B. Kutleshi, K. Rahmani, Q. MacNicol; M. Memeti, M. Caputo, A. Mabil

Both teams are tipped to find the back of the net in a score-draw on Saturday night.
