AFC Asian Cup History
Held every four years, the AFC Asian Cup is organised by the Asian Football Conference (AFC). While the trophy is hugely sought after, the fact the winner of the AFC Asian Cup gains a place at the Confederations Cup means each side that goes into the competition does everything they can to be the last side standing.
The first competition was held in Hong Kong back in 1954 and is the second oldest continental football competition in the world after the Copa America. The competition has been held every four years since 1956 up until 2004. However, the AFC decided to hold what would have been the 2008 edition in 2007 so as not to clash with the Summer Olympics and UEFA European Football Championships.
Japan are the most successful side in the history of the competition with four winners medals and one runners-up medal. Saudi Arabia and Iran have notched three gold medals, while South Korea and Qatar have two tournament wins.
