Stan Wawrinka faces Flavio Cobolli in the ATP Lyon second round, with both players known for tight matches—four tiebreaks in two previous encounters, both won by Cobolli in three sets. Wawrinka, nearing retirement, remains competitive, recently winning his first ATP match since May. Despite Wawrinka’s resilience, Cobolli is predicted to edge out a three-set win in another close contest. The article recommends anticipating another tiebreak-heavy, three-set match, with Cobolli as the slight favorite.

Flavio Cobolli vs Stan Wawrinka ATP Lyon Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Flavio Cobolli and Stan Wawrinka have played four tiebreaks in their two previous meetings, with the enigmatic Italian winning both in three sets - good value for both of those outcomes to repeat when the pair clash in the second round of Lyon on Thursday night.

Wawrinka continues his farewell tour as the legendary Swiss prepares to retire at his home tournament in Basel next week.

The 41-year-old won his first ATP match since May in his first round over Martin Landaluce, 6-3 6-7(2) 7-6(5).

As you can see, Wawrinka saw two tiebreaks and that's a sustained trend for the veteran.

Indeed, Wawrinka has played at least one tiebreak in nine of his last 12 matches at all levels, along with five in his last six against top 10 opponents.

Cobolli is wildly talented, but also wildly erratic - he comes into this clash on a four match losing run, with his last two defeats coming vs players outside the top 80.

Bottom line here is that Cobolli is far from reliable and Wawrinka will obviously leave everything out there in the second-last tournament of his career.

I can see Wawrinka snatching a set, but this match is big enough for Cobolli to care and when the motivation is there, the Italian should prove too strong.
  • Wawrinka has seen 1+ tiebreak in nine of his last 12 matches
  • Wawrinka has seen 1+ tiebreak in five of his last six matches vs top 10 players
  • Wawrinka & Cobolli have played four tiebreaks in their two previous matches
  • Cobolli is on a four-match losing streak
  • Cobolli has suffered four defeats vs players ranked 100+ this season
  • Cobolli has dropped 1+ set in his last six victories

Flavio Cobolli Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 33-22
  • ATP Lyon Record: 0-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 6
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 6 (August 2026)

Cobolli would have to be the most erratic player on tour.

On one hand, it's been an amazing 2026 - Cobolli made his first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, won the 500 title in Acapulco, finished runner-up in Munich and also made the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and semis of Cincinnati.

However, on the other hand, Cobolli has also suffered 10 opening round exits as he arrives in Brussels on a four-match losing streak.

The talent is obviously there, but the consistency, motivation and focus from week to week remains a work in progress.

Cobolli went 0-2 during the Asian swing, losing in the first round of Beijing and Shanghai to Roman Safiullin and Adrian Mannarino - two players ranked 80+.

Stan Wawrinka Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 8-17
  • ATP Lyon Record: 1-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 140
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 3 (2024)

The illustrious career of Stan Wawrinka will come to an end next week in Basel, but the 41-year-old has managed to create more memories throughout 2026.

Wawrinka helped Switzerland to the final of the United Cup at the start of the year and also made the third round of the Australian Open.

The three-time major champion was able to enjoy some nice moments at the slams in his final year on tour, playing fun matches against Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon and the US Open.

But the Swiss isn't done yet - Wawrinka produced moments of brilliance in upstaging Martin Landaluce, who is 21 years his junior, in the first round of Brussels, digging out a 6-3 6-7(2) 7-6(5) victory on his fifth match point.
