ATP Structure

The ATP Tour is structured into three core tournament tiers - ATP 250, ATP 500 and ATP Masters 1000 -each representing a different level of ranking points, prestige and prize money on the men’s professional circuit. ATP 250 events form the foundation of the schedule, with more than 40 tournaments staged worldwide across all surfaces. These are the most accessible events for rising players looking to build rankings, while top-ranked stars typically use them for form building, injury returns, or scheduling tune-ups. Winners receive 250 ranking points, with draws generally smaller and field strength depending heavily on the week and location.

Above them sit the ATP 500 tournaments, a premium mid-tier category offering 500 ranking points to the champion. These events attract stronger fields, as they play a significant role in determining ATP Finals qualification and year-end rankings. Spread across iconic tennis cities like Barcelona, Dubai, Rio, Washington and Beijing, ATP 500s often blend elite contenders with dangerous challengers, resulting in high-quality early-round matchups. Commitment requirements also encourage top-10 players to appear regularly across the season, boosting competitiveness and fan interest.

At the top of the regular-season ladder are the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, the most prestigious events outside the Grand Slams. Featuring mandatory participation for the world’s best players (with limited exceptions), these nine tournaments award 1,000 points to the winner and serve as key markers in shaping the season narrative. Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris stand as the sport’s true battlegrounds, often previewing Grand Slam form and shaping rivalries. Masters events combine massive crowds, deep draws and elite competition, making them an essential pillar of the ATP calendar and the most influential tournaments in determining season-long success.

Each year then concludes with the prestigious ATP Finals, currently held in Turin, Italy. The tournament features the top eight players of the year who battle it out for the right to be crowned year-end champion.
