ATP Hong Kong History

The ATP Hong Kong Open is one of Asia’s longest-standing tennis events, with a history that stretches back to the early years of the professional era. First held in 1973, the tournament became a key stop on the Grand Prix tennis circuit and later the ATP Tour, offering an important gateway for the sport’s expansion into Asia. Positioned strategically in the post-US Open portion of the calendar, the event regularly attracted elite players looking to build form and ranking points heading into the end-of-season indoor swing. Although it went through periods of interruption, the Hong Kong Open built a reputation as one of the region’s most prestigious tennis tournaments.

Throughout its history, the event has welcomed a remarkable list of champions, reflecting its status within the global tennis landscape. Legendary names such as Ken Rosewall, Rod Laver and Jimmy Connors all lifted the trophy, helping establish its credibility in the 1970s. The tournament continued to draw top-10 players in the decades that followed, with the likes of Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, and Mark Philippoussis contributing to some of its most memorable finals.

After a long hiatus following its 2002 edition, the ATP Hong Kong Open made a high-profile return to the ATP calendar, revitalised as part of the ATP 250 series and taking place at the very start of each year - providing the perfect launchpad into the Aussie summer and Australian Open. Its comeback underscored the ATP’s commitment to bolstering the Asian swing and expanding competitive opportunities outside Europe and North America.
