The United Cup was officially established in 2023 and is intent on becoming a mainstay to launch the new tennis year ahead of the Australian Open later in January.

Aiming to fill the gap left by the Hopman Cup and the short-lived ATP Cup, the United Cup is the first mixed-gender team event to offer ranking points to players.

With a maximum of 500 ranking points up for grabs, players have every incentive to go all out in their first tournament of the new season, along with of course fine-tuning their games with the Australian Open coming up later in the month.

The United Cup is played on outdoor hardcourt and across multiple cities in Australia, with the 2026 edition being held in Perth and Sydney.

A total of 18 nations compete in the current format of the United Cup, with three groups of three countries competing in the round robin stage. Each session consists of one men's singles match, one women's singles match and a mixed doubles match.

The group winners will progress to the quarter-finals, with the semi-finals and final to be held in Sydney at the Ken Rosewall Arena.

USA are the reigning United Cup champions having defeated Poland 2-0 in the 2025 final.

United Cup History

The United Cup is an international mixed-team tennis event launched in 2023, created to bring together the world’s top ATP and WTA players in a single combined competition. Designed as the spiritual successor to the Hopman Cup, it became the first official event in tennis to award both ATP and WTA ranking points to participants while featuring men and women competing side by side for their nations. Co-sanctioned by the ATP, WTA, and Tennis Australia, the United Cup was introduced as a marquee curtain-raiser for the global tennis season, held across major Australian cities in the lead-up to the Australian Open.

Structurally, the United Cup features national squads made up of at least two ATP players and two WTA players, competing across singles and mixed doubles matches in a multi-stage format. Teams are grouped into pools for the opening round-robin phase, with each tie typically consisting of two men’s singles matches, two women’s singles matches, and one mixed doubles match. The winners advance through city finals and knockout rounds before the best nations converge for the semifinals and championship match. The unique mixed-team format has quickly made the United Cup one of the most engaging and distinctive events on the tennis calendar.

Since its inception, the tournament has produced a variety of standout champions. The United States won the inaugural title in 2023, while Germany emerged triumphant in 2024. USA then returned to the champions corner in 2025, defeating Poland in the final.  As the event continues to evolve, the United Cup has already cemented itself as a key team competition and a fan-favourite start to the new tennis season.
