In the United Cup quarter-finals, Sebastian Baez and Stan Wawrinka are set to face each other in a highly anticipated match. Wawrinka, a four-time major champion, is looking to continue his impressive resurgence at the age of 40. Meanwhile, Baez has had an incredible start to the season, capturing a notable victory over Taylor Fritz. The match is expected to be a closely contested, multi-set affair. Baez's youth and current form might give him the edge, though Wawrinka's experience can't be underestimated.

Sebastian Baez vs Stan Wawrinka Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Four-time major champion Stan Wawrinka will be looking to continue his resurgent form to start 2026 when he faces Sebastian Baez in the United Cup quarter-finals in Perth on Wednesday night.

Both players have been extremely impressive in helping their respective nations set up this unlikely United Cup quarter-final. Wawrinka, representing Switzerland as a captain/player, has been on court for over six hours in his two singles matches, upsetting Arthur Rinderknech and losing out in a deciding set tiebreak to Flavio Cobolli. Meanwhile, Argentina's Baez has been one of the surprise standouts early in the season, conquering Jaume Munar before earning just his second ever top 10 scalp with a three-set dispatch of Taylor Fritz.

It's shaping as another tight contest, with Wawrinka already involved in two deciding set tiebreaks to launch his final year on tour. Playing for an Australian Open wildcard, the 40-year-old is going to leave everything out there. Baez loves the grind and has put his poor form from last year behind him, operating with a newfound confidence and authority on hardcourt. I'm backing Over 22.5 total games and I've got to side with the younger Baez if the match goes deep into the third.
  • Wawrinka has seen Over 22.5 games in his last four matches
  • Four of Wawrinka's six sets at this United Cup have gone to a tiebreak
  • Baez saw Over 22.5 games in his last United Cup match win over Fritz
  • Wawrinka hasn't registered multiple wins over top 50 players in a single tournament since Stockholm 2024
  • Baez hasn't won three matches in a row on hardcourt since Winston Salem in 2023

Baez vs Wawrinka Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Sebastian Baez Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 2-0
  • 2025 Record: 17-24
  • United Cup Record: 2-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 43
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 18 (2024)

I don't think anyone expected Baez to start the year 2-0 on hardcourt, but the Argentine has been operating near career-best form in Perth on his United Cup debut.

Baez went 3-12 on hardcourt in 2025 and didn't beat a top 50 player on the surface all year.

However, the 25-year-old clearly had a fruitful off-season, because he's come out on fire in 2026, taking out the in-form Jaume Munar 6-4 6-4 in his opening match before a brilliant three-set victory over Taylor Fritz.

Baez recovered from dropping the opening set to prevail 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, registering just the second top 10 win of his career and helping Argentina advance into the United Cup quarter-finals alongside teammate Solana Sierra.

Stan Wawrinka Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 1-1
  • 2025 Record: 4-13
  • United Cup Record: 2-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 156
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 3 (2014)

Wawrinka announced late last year that 2026 would be the final year of his stellar career and he's started it off in hugely impressive fashion.

Now 40 years of age, Wawrinka has wound back the clock with two tremendous performances at the United Cup for Switzerland, defeating Shanghai Masters finalist Arthur Rinderknech in three sets before going down in a deciding set tiebreak to World No. 22 Flavio Cobolli.

In total, Wawrinka - who is also captaining Switzerland at the United Cup - has spent over six hours on court for his two singles matches, with teammate Belinda Bencic also doing her part to help the team advance to the last eight.

Wawrinka, the 2014 Australian Open champion, is also still in contention for a wildcard to the first Grand Slam of the year, which starts in a little over a week in Melbourne.

Verdict

Another close contest involving Wawrinka looms here, but Baez is 15 years younger and fresher after the 40-year-old spent six hours on court during his two singles matches. Backing Baez in three.
