Saturday’s racing across Australia throws up several double-figure chances worth considering, with our roughies coming from Ascot, Caulfield, Eagle Farm, Morphettville and Rosehill.

Ascot Roughie Tip

Ascot Roughie - Race 4 No. 8 Ocean Goddess

Still lightly raced for a six-year-old, Ocean Goddess has done very little wrong across 11 career starts and has generally been competitive whenever she has gone to the races.

The Jessica Carbery-trained mare broke through over 1600m at Belmont on February 18 before returning at Northam on August 27 and finding the better going out wide to score at a good each-way price.

She was unable to go back-to-back in a Class 3 at Belmont on September 16 when rising to 60kg, settling further back than ideal and finding herself awkwardly placed before Vampi Queen swept around her with momentum and put the race away.

Ocean Goddess meets that rival 1.5kg better at the weights this time and drops 3.5kg overall, while barrier five should allow a more economical run, and although she may ultimately be better suited back at a mile, there has always looked to be a Saturday-grade race in her.

Caulfield Roughie Tip

Caulfield Roughie - Race 10 No. 9 Fireball Miss

At a big price, Fireball Miss is the runner with the most upside in a very open Caulfield finale, with the Queensland Oaks winner having completed only one preparation.

She showed enough speed early in her career to suggest she is far from simply a staying mare, having been unlucky over 1200m on debut before winning a 1500m Super Maiden and remaining competitive at shorter trips as she progressed through the Queensland staying features.

The four-year-old holds an Empire Rose Stakes nomination over the mile, which suggests she should be forward enough to be competitive fresh over 1400m, while Declan Bates knows her well after partnering her several times last preparation.

Bates was aboard for her wins in The Roses and Queensland Oaks, and against a field containing plenty of exposed profiles, Fireball Miss is one of the few runners who may still have another level to find.

Eagle Farm Roughie Tip

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 9 No. 2 Sun Worshipper

Sun Worshipper has been well held in all three runs this season, but those appearances have largely been about building fitness after a freshen-up and there was more merit than the bare result in her latest Toowoomba Cup effort.

Taken back from a wide draw over 2000m, the Matt Kropp-trained mare was held up and never able to build momentum in a race where those within striking distance were advantaged, but the run should provide a strong platform for the rise to 2400m.

Her form through the late autumn and winter carnival reads well for this, including an Eagle Farm win on January 3, a Listed runner-up finish here over 2100m, an Ipswich Cup placing and a fourth in the Caloundra Cup.

That Caloundra Cup form has since been strengthened by runner-up So You Are winning his past two starts at stakes level in Sydney, and while 2400m remains a query, pacifiers go on and a kinder draw gives Taylor Marshall more options.

Morphettville Roughie Tip

Morphettville Roughie - Race 3 No. 4 Skytalker

Skytalker has made the move from Western Australia to South Australia with trainer Indianna Weinert and has shown enough in two local appearances to suggest he is capable of being competitive at this level.

His previous campaign included a first-up Bunbury victory before a consistent run of placings through summer and early autumn, and that solid profile has carried over since changing states.

The six-year-old arguably should have won first-up at Bordertown on September 11 when narrowly beaten, before a wide barrier forced him further back than ideal in a Murray Bridge Class 2 on September 26.

Skytalker still worked home strongly there and recorded the second-fastest final 200m of the race, while he now stays in the same grade third-up, carries 1.5kg less and gets a kinder draw for Harry Grace, making the double-figure quote appealing.

Rosehill Roughie Tip

Rosehill Roughie - Race 9 No. 16 Oui Oui Oui

Oui Oui Oui looks to have been given every chance to fire fresh, with connections still searching for a first black-type success and the mare having already demonstrated how effective she can be early in a preparation.

She opened last spring with a winning hat-trick before returning quickly in the autumn, where she still managed a runner-up finish in a Provincial-Midway Championships Qualifier on February 19 and later produced a better-than-it-looked Group 3 run at Rosehill.

Jason Attard has given the five-year-old plenty of time since her Provincial-Midway Championships Final appearance, and her trial work has been encouraging through an August 28 win and a September 22 Rosehill hit-out behind Group 1 winner Caballus.

Her two 1400m victories came in weaker company, but she may ultimately prove even more effective around these sprint trips, and with a strong fresh profile and the ability to unleash a big finish, she looks capable of figuring at a good price.
