Novak Djokovic is predicted to extend his perfect record against Hubert Hurkacz to 9-0 in their upcoming second-round ATP Shanghai encounter, a match expected to feature at least one tiebreak. Djokovic, fresh from winning his 102nd title in Beijing and with a stellar history in Shanghai, holds all matchup advantages but faces a potentially tough, serve-dominated clash. Hurkacz enters this round after a strong recovery from injury, showcasing winning form. While the match may be competitive, the consensus is that Djokovic’s dominance in this rivalry is hard to overlook.

Novak Djokovic vs Hubert Hurkacz ATP Shanghai Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Novak Djokovic is tipped to improve to 9-0 over Hubert Hurkacz in a match that features at least one tiebreak when the two former Shanghai Masters champions square off in a marquee second round showdown on Friday night.

Fresh off winning his 102nd tour-level title in Beijing earlier this week, Djokovic faces a quick turnaround as he embarks on another Shanghai Masters campaign - he's a record four-time champion at the tournament and will be keen to keep building momentum as he aims to qualify for the year-end ATP Finals.

Hurkacz also went deep at the China Open before being forced to retire in the semi-finals. The unseeded Pole didn't have luxury of a bye in Shanghai and opened his campaign on Thursday, beating James Duckworth in straight sets.

Obviously Djokovic has the clear matchup advantage here - equipped with arguably the greatest return of all time, he has the tools to handle Hurkacz's biggest weapon.

But I still think serve will dominate this encounter and want to focus on the tiebreaks. Hurkacz has been playing tons of them lately and relatively speaking, so has Djokovic.

Five of the last 10 sets between the pair have also been tiebreaks - including 1+ in the last three, with the first set seeing a breaker in two.

It will be interesting to see how Djokovic's body pulls up after a physically taxing week in Beijing, but you can't tip against him in this matchup.
  • Hurkacz has seen 1+ tiebreak in eight of his last 10 completed matches
  • Djokovic has seen 1+ tiebreak in seven of his last 10 matches
  • The last three meetings between the pair have seen 1+ tiebreak (five in 10 sets, with two coming in the first set)
  • Djokovic has won all eight previous meetings, with three of the last four best-of-three going Over 21.5 games

Djokovic vs Hurkacz Head To Head

As mentioned, Djokovic leads 8-0 - but Hurkacz has taken a set in five of them.

Novak Djokovic Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 19-7
  • ATP Shanghai Record: 43-7
  • Current Ranking: No. 8
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 1 (2011)

Djokovic wasn't out of the top 10 for long, extending his incredible unbeaten streak at the China Open to 34 matches as he put together a remarkable tournament to secure the silverware.

The 39-year-old looked physically troubled in his opening two wins over Nuno Borges and Bu Yunchaokete, but something changed and the legendary Serbian proceeded to register three top 10 wins on the trot.

Djokovic came from a set down to conquer World No. 1-in-waiting Alexander Zverev before moving past Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur. Djokovic's level against Medvedev in particular was extremely high and if he can consistently hit that sort of form for the rest of the year, he should be able to qualify for the ATP Finals - something he said is driving him.

Another opportunity for valuable points beckons in Shanghai, where Djokovic is a four-time champion - but he did suffer a surprise defeat to eventual shock winner Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals last year.

Hubert Hurkacz Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 24-19
  • ATP Shanghai Record: 8-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 34
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 6 (2024)

Hurkacz is also a former Shanghai Masters champion having claimed the silverware in 2023 - and he made it seven straight match wins at the tournament by winning his opening round on Thursday.

Arriving in Shanghai under some injury concerns following last week's retirement in Beijing, Hurkacz looked fit and ready to go as he moved past James Duckworth 6-3 7-6(4), firing down 19 aces in the process.

The Pole suffered a rankings dip following knee surgery last year - but after a slow initial return to the tour, Hurkacz is beginning to find his best tennis on a more consistent basis.

Indeed, Hurkacz has now won 13 of his last 16 matches at all levels, including a runner-up finish in Chengdu before a semi-final in Beijing.
