Tommy Paul and Zizou Bergs clash for a Shanghai Masters quarter-final spot after Bergs' stunning upset of Carlos Alcaraz. While Bergs is coming off a career-best win, Paul holds a dominant head-to-head advantage, having easily beaten Bergs earlier this year at Indian Wells. Paul's consistency and success against top-ranked players, combined with Bergs’ inconsistency and fitness concerns, make the American the favourite. The article predicts Paul will progress to the quarter-finals, backed to cover a -2.5 game line in victory.

Tommy Paul vs Zizou Bergs ATP Shanghai Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Tommy Paul dropped just three games when he beat Zizou Bergs earlier this year and the American is backed to come out on top again as the pair square off for a spot in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

Bergs is coming off the biggest win of his career in the previous round, stunning Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. It was an outstanding performance from the Belgian, especially recovering from the disappointment of initially failing to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set, ultimately closing out the famous victory in the tiebreak.

However, backing up wins of that magnitude can be problematic, especially for a player like Bergs, who remains volatile and has suffered from physical/fitness issues throughout his career.

Paul is the last player you want to face in such a scenario - the American usually makes his opponent play their best to beat him and he's just a dogged competitor who has plenty of experience in the latter stages of Masters events.

As mentioned, Paul demolished Bergs 6-1 6-2 in Indian Wells earlier this year and while the scoreline might not be quite as emphatic, I'm predicting the American to progress relatively comfortably again here.
  • Paul has won six of his last seven R16 matches
  • Paul has a 34-12 record vs 20+ ranked players this season
  • Bergs has lost three of his last four R16 matches
  • Bergs has a 6-21 record vs top 20 players
  • Paul has won his last three Masters 1000 R16 matches

Paul vs Bergs Head To Head

Paul leads 1-0, blitzing Bergs in straight sets at Indian Wells earlier this season.

Tommy Paul Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 41-18
  • ATP Shanghai Record: 6-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 18
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 8 (2025)

It's been an excellent overall season for Paul after niggling injuries disrupted his 2025 campaign, with the American needing just two more victories to surpass his previous career-best mark of 42 wins in a season.

Paul has won 22 of his 33 matches on outdoor hardcourts this year, while he's also reached four ATP finals, lifting the title in Houston and finishing runner-up in Delray Beach, Hamburg and Queen's Club.

The American enjoyed a solid summer on home soil, reaching the Cincinnati Masters quarter-finals before advancing to the R16 at the US Open, where he went down to Carlos Alcaraz.

Paul made a disastrous start to his Asian swing, winning just three games in a shock first-round loss to Alejandro Tabilo in Tokyo. However, he appears to have quickly put that performance behind him, cruising past Vallejo 6-2, 6-2 in a dominant Shanghai opener before taking out defending champion Valentin Vacherot.

Paul's supreme athleticism and shotmaking was on full display as he ended Vacherot's unbeaten run in Shanghai with a 6-4 6-2 triumph.

Zizou Bergs Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 23-21
  • ATP Shanghai Record: 8-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 39
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 33 (Aug 2026)

Bergs still has some work to do when it comes to consistency and producing his best tennis on a weekly basis, but his strong results in 2026 have been enough to propel him into the top 40.

The Belgian captured his maiden ATP title on the grass in Eastbourne and has continued to produce some solid results over the last couple of months, reaching the third round at both Wimbledon and the US Open.

Shanghai proved to be something of a breakout tournament for Bergs last year, with the Belgian defeating Casper Ruud on his way to a maiden Masters 1000 quarter-final before eventually falling to Novak Djokovic.

Bergs is once again thriving in the Chinese city, bulldozing his way into the third round with dominant 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-3 victories over Vit Kopriva and Ignacio Buse respectively.

The 27-year-old then produced the best performance of his career to shock Carlos Alcaraz 7-5 7-6(4) in the third round. Bergs won 37/47 points behind his first serve and kept his composure in the tiebreak to close out a famous win and extend his record in Shanghai to 8-2.
