Eagle Farm Best Bet - Race 1 No. 2 Dragon Link

Two runner-up finishes from three starts give Dragon Link a strong profile heading into his return, with both placings coming during his previous preparation.

Beaten two-and-a-half lengths over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast first-up, the Matthew Hoysted-trained gelding backed that up with a narrow defeat on the Gold Coast Poly in February after starting a short-priced favourite on both occasions.

The first of those efforts came on a Soft 5 surface, so Wednesday’s forecast conditions hold no concerns, while both races have since produced subsequent winners.

A dominant Deagon trial victory on September 29 advertised his readiness for this return, with Dragon Link coming home more than three lengths clear of his nearest rival.

Barrier four gives Jag Guthmann-Chester, who rode him at the Sunshine Coast, the chance to secure an economical run, and Dragon Link looks well placed to break his maiden at the fourth attempt.

Eagle Farm Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 1 Cigar Man

A third victory of the preparation came over 2412m at Eagle Farm on September 19, giving Cigar Man winning course form heading into another staying assignment.

The five-year-old relished the rise in distance that day, racing prominently before scoring by just under a length in BM62 company on a Soft surface.

That form has held up strongly, with the seventh and twelfth from the race winning subsequently, while the second and fourth both finished runner-up at their following appearances.

Ayasaki, who filled second behind Cigar Man in that event, again lines up here, with the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained gelding expected to track the speed from barrier three.

Apprentice Ryan Houston removes 2kg from his 61kg impost and, with the forecast Soft 5 conditions in his favour and Cigar Man still unexposed at this distance, he looks capable of recording back-to-back victories.

Higgins Coatings Class 5 Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Eagle Farm Roughie - Race 5 No. 2 Shirvington

A change of stable accompanies Shirvington’s return, with the five-year-old now trained by Michael Freedman after previously recording five wins for Bjorn Baker.

Three of those wins came first-up, including a BM78 success on rain-affected ground at Wyong in March, giving him a strong profile fresh.

His form tailed off following that victory, with the gelding well held in three subsequent starts before his campaign ended at Gosford in May.

There was plenty to like about his recent Gold Coast trial, however, with the son of Capitalist cruising home more than three lengths clear of his nearest rival over 1000m.

Soft ground, barrier one and Jace McMurray’s claim all work in his favour, and with Shirvington already proven over this distance, he looks capable of producing a sharp return at odds.

Drinkwater caught the eye in his trials before returning with a maiden victory over 1000m at the Gold Coast at the end of August.

The Toby Edmonds-trained gelding controlled that Good-ground event from the front and proved too strong late, scoring by just under two lengths.

Similar tactics were employed when he stepped up to 1110m at Doomben next time, where he had to work hard to find the lead before fading late but still holding third in Class 1 company.

That effort showed he can be competitive in the city, and the son of Blue Point should enjoy a much easier time in transit this time from barrier one under Daniel Moor.

The rise to 1200m is the next query, but with a softer run expected from the inside draw and natural improvement possible third-up, Drinkwater looks capable of making his presence felt.
