Ascot Tips October 14

Indigenous Tennis & Learning Maiden Tips (Race 1)

Ascot Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 9 Bourbonontherocks

While the 1100m proved on the sharp side, there was plenty to like about Bourbonontherocks’ debut at Northam on September 23, where he started at single figures and finished third behind Official Business, beaten just over a length.

The Justine Erkelens-trained gelding raced in restricted room at key stages but picked up again late, with that effort suggesting the rise to 1400m at start two should play to his strengths.

That performance also followed encouraging lead-up work, including a Belmont trial win over 1000m on September 14, while the son of Awesome Rock is bred to appreciate further as his three-year-old season progresses.

His pedigree strongly supports the rise in distance, with Chantrea a dual Listed winner at 2000m+ and the closely related In The Mist a five-time stakes winner who won over 2250m, while the Northam form has also been strengthened by runner-up Firearm winning on October 4 and Frosted Warrior subsequently producing a luckless run in a good Bunbury maiden last Wednesday.

Saints ’N’ Sinners also comes through that Northam maiden but was safely held by Bourbonontherocks and now draws wide, while barrier five gives the selection a tactical advantage over that main rival.

Ascot Best Bet - Race 2 No. 8 Luna Will Do

Luna Will Do first caught the eye with a fourth-of-12 finish in Saturday two-year-old company at Ascot on May 9, where she closed well from back in the field with the fastest late sectionals of the race.

The Adam Durrant-trained filly was again fourth at Belmont over 1000m on May 23 before resuming over the same trip on September 19 behind the speedy Dawn Dancer, who has recorded four wins since the start of July, including a third in Saturday metropolitan company, before subsequently failing at Listed level.

That fresh effort also saw Luna Will Do finish almost a length clear of Anaconda Jones, an Ascot winner in April who has not missed a placing in four starts, and she now finds a suitable midweek assignment despite taking on previous race winners.

Most importantly, the daughter of Playing God finally gets out to 1200m second-up, with her pedigree also supporting the rise as she is out of the Lonhro mare Futurism, while further references through the dam side suggest she should ultimately appreciate even more ground.

Holly Nottle remains in the saddle and has ridden eight winners for the Adam Durrant stable over the past 12 months, with the extra distance looking a significant positive for a filly who appears ready to convert her promise into a first victory.

GTT Ventures Trophy Tips (Race 6)

Ascot Value Bet - Race 6 No. 12 Gav Has Spoken

Hard race fitness is a major positive for Gav Has Spoken in Wednesday’s penultimate event, with the Brett Mathews-trained mare arriving after placings at each of her past two starts.

The five-year-old was beaten as favourite when third-of-13 over 1760m at Kalgoorlie on October 1 after settling well off the speed, with the winner enjoying a saloon passage and the runner-up landing in the box seat without having to go around a horse, meaning the quinella enjoyed significantly more economical runs.

That followed an eye-catching effort over 1685m at Bunbury on September 17, where she came from near the rear and produced the fastest closing sectionals as runner-up to Sandfire Rose, who subsequently franked the form by completing a winning double on Kalgoorlie Cup Day.

There may have been a few minor interruptions earlier in the preparation given the five-week gap following a nice return, but she now has a much stronger fitness base and could have been a little vulnerable late over 1760m last time.

Dropping back to 1600m should suit, while she carries 2.5kg less than at her latest start and now gets Holly Watson in the saddle, an in-form hoop who recorded a winning double at Ascot last Saturday.
