However, the German has also benefitted from long-term injuries to Sinner and Alcaraz, which has contributed significantly to him becoming the No. 1-in-wating.
It hasn't been smooth sailing here in Shanghai. After losing to Alex de Minaur at the Laver Cup and Novak Djokovic in Beijing last week, Zverev was taken to a tiebreak in his first round vs Yibing Wu (6-4 7-6(4)) before needing a deciding set to edge out Quentin Halys in the third round (6-4 6-7(8) 6-3).
Zverev didn't face a break point in that win over Halys and has now notched up 60 wins in a year for the third time in his career.
