The 2026 Everest market continues to revolve around Ka Ying Rising, but the picture underneath the defending champion has shifted again after the latest round of Sydney lead-ups and Tuesday morning’s Randwick barrier trial.

Ka Ying Rising remains the $1.30 favourite with EliteBet after returning in Hong Kong with another dominant win in the Chief Executive’s Cup, extending his winning streak to 21 and lowering his own Sha Tin 1200m course record. He then completed his Australian preparation with a 1000m Randwick trial on Tuesday, finishing narrowly behind Ninja on a Soft 7 without connections showing any concern.

Tempted is the clear second pick at $6 after a dominant victory in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes over 1200m at Randwick. The Ciaron Maher-trained mare was runner-up to Ka Ying Rising in last year’s Everest and has now strung together another strong preparation as she attempts to turn the tables 12 months later.

Jimmysstar sits at $15 after returning to his best with victory in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at Caulfield. The Ciaron Maher-trained sprinter has since been confirmed for The Everest, with Nash Rawiller booked to ride after Ethan Brown committed to Zahrann in the Caulfield Cup on the same day.

Joliestar is quoted at $18 as Chris Waller continues to build her towards another Everest attempt. The Group 1-winning mare has again been aimed at the race after a strong autumn and was among the sprinters to trial alongside Ka Ying Rising at Randwick on Tuesday.

Ninja is next at $21 after edging Ka Ying Rising in that 1000m trial. The Michael Freedman-trained four-year-old had already secured his Everest slot following a successful return in the Group 2 Missile Stakes and now heads towards the $20 million sprint with five wins from 10 starts.

Blue Door rounds out the leading six at $26 after winning the Group 3 Heritage Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill in near track-record time. The lightly raced Bjorn Baker-trained three-year-old secured the Newgate slot soon after that performance, with Jamie Melham booked for the lightweight assignment.

With Ka Ying Rising still setting the benchmark, Tempted coming off a dominant Premiere Stakes win, Jimmysstar arriving as a last-start Group 1 winner and several other contenders already locked into slots, The Everest market is beginning to take a much firmer shape ahead of Randwick on October 17.

The Everest History

First run in 2017, The Everest quickly transformed the Australian racing landscape and has since developed into one of the most recognisable sprint races in world racing.

Held at Randwick each October, the race is built around a unique slot-holder concept, with 12 positions purchased by owners, breeders, racing organisations and other investors who then secure a runner for the event.

With $20 million in prizemoney, The Everest is the richest turf race in the world and has become one of the major attractions of the Sydney spring carnival, drawing elite sprinters from Australia and overseas.

The race was won by Redzel in each of its first two editions in 2017 and 2018, establishing him as the event’s first dual winner.

Since then, the honour roll has continued to build with Yes Yes Yes in 2019, Classique Legend in 2020, Nature Strip in 2021, Giga Kick in 2022, Think About It in 2023 and Bella Nipotina in 2024.

Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising added his name to the list in 2025, further enhancing the international profile of a race that has grown rapidly in prestige since its introduction.
