The 2026 Toorak Handicap, taking place on Caulfield Guineas Day, features a highly competitive 15-strong field with varying form lines. Lady Shenandoah is the early favourite at $6, but the analysis highlights Sabaj as the best bet, with Regal Award as the next best and Panova as the value selection. All three horses have strong credentials based on recent performances and profiles suitable for the mile. The contest’s openness means punters will need to weigh form, conditions, and tactical angles.

Saturday’s 2026 Toorak Handicap has come up as one of the more open contests on Caulfield Guineas Day, with a deep 15-horse field and several different form lines converging over the mile.

Lady Shenandoah and Regal Award sit prominently in the market, while Evaporate, Changing Colours, Warnie and Sabaj all bring genuine claims through varying lead-ups and profiles. Panova also adds another layer to the race after progressing through strong mile and middle-distance form.

While she could still come out of the field given her Alan Brown Stakes acceptance from a favourable draw in Sydney, Lady Shenandoah remains the $6 favourite with CrownBet for the 2026 Toorak Handicap.

2026 Toorak Handicap Tips

2026 Toorak Handicap Best Bet - Sabaj

This preparation has been building towards the Toorak for Sabaj, with the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding using two 1400m runs as his platform into the mile.

He was well beaten fresh in the Memsie Stakes and was not suited by the way that race unfolded, but the second-up effort in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes was much better than the 12th-of-16 finish suggests.

Sabaj was never genuinely in contention after conceding a sizeable start, yet still produced the fastest last 200m of the Group 1 and the third-fastest final 200m of the entire meeting, a strong indication that he is building towards a peak performance.

Blinkers go on for the first time, he drops into a handicap with 54kg, and while he may ultimately prove even better over further, his mile record is sound and he did win third-up over this distance in the Cranbourne Cup last spring.

His unlucky All-Star Mile run earlier this year also reads superbly for a handicap of this nature, and while he may be better suited on a bigger circuit, the Cranbourne Cup win showed he can perform around a tighter track, giving him a strong platform to spike at an each-way quote.
2026 Toorak Handicap Next Best Bet - Regal Award

There was plenty to like about Regal Award’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes return after he gave a strong sight on speed and held on for third behind Angel Capital and Sepals.

The Phillip and Tommy Stokes-trained four-year-old can be a quirky customer and raced a touch keenly fresh, which is why Lachlan Neindorf retaining the ride is particularly important. Neindorf has developed an excellent understanding of Regal Award and has been aboard for two of his three career wins, as well as his runner-up finish in the Carbine Club Stakes and latest Group 1 placing.

That combination clicked in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic at Eagle Farm, where Regal Award defeated Skyhook, while Neindorf was also aboard for his dominant 7.5-length Caulfield mile victory last spring.

The Fred Best form has continued to stand up through Skyhook, while Regal Award’s Carbine Club Stakes second to subsequent Group 1 winner Panova provides another strong reference at 1600m.

He was a little fresh and keen in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, but that is part of his make-up, and with that run under his belt and Neindorf again allowing him to find his rhythm, Regal Award looks capable of improving again second-up.
2026 Toorak Handicap Value Bet - Panova

A Chris Waller-trained outsider is rarely one to dismiss in a major handicap, and we were given another reminder of that in last Saturday’s Epsom Handicap when God’s Window saluted at a huge price after featuring among our value selections.

Panova brings a similarly interesting profile at big odds, having returned in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on September 5 before being kept ticking over with a Rosehill trial on September 22 ahead of the trip south.

The four-year-old brings a perfect record racing anti-clockwise, highlighted by her victory in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes over the Flemington mile last Derby Day, where she came from well back to run down Regal Award by 1.75 lengths.

That form gives her an obvious line through one of the leading Toorak chances, while she subsequently progressed during the autumn to win the Group 1 Australasian Oaks over 2000m and her profile suggests she is most effective on top of the ground.

William Pike takes the ride and, provided Caulfield remains firm enough, Panova has the potential to give this a genuine shake at a big price.
