The WTA Finals is the season-ending championships for the year's top eight players and is the biggest tournament of the year outside of the four Grand Slams.
Established in 1972, the WTA Finals has the largest prize money and most ranking points on offer after the majors.
Since 2003, the WTA Finals has implemented a unique format not used on the regular tour, with the eight players split into two groups of four, with the top two players from each group emerging into a knockout phase, with the semi-finals and final to then determine the champion.
An undefeated champion at the WTA Finals can earn a maximum 1500 ranking points. Martina Navratilova is the most successful player in WTA Finals history, winning eight singles and 13 doubles titles.
The WTA Finals has alternated venues over the last few years and is currently played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
