WTA Brisbane History

The WTA Brisbane International was launched in 2009 as part of a major overhaul of Australia’s summer tennis schedule. Created to replace the previous Gold Coast and Adelaide events, Brisbane quickly became one of the premier build-up tournaments to the Australian Open. Held at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Plexicushion hard courts, the event traditionally combined both ATP and WTA fields, giving fans a world-class mixed tournament and offering players ideal match conditions ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year. Its early-January slot also made it a key destination for top-10 stars seeking competitive preparation after the off-season.

Structurally, the WTA Brisbane International was upgraded to a 500 event in 2012. The tournament is known for its fast courts, high temperatures and intense early-season battles, often producing high-quality matches straight out of the gate. The event paused from 2021 to 2023 due to the pandemic and the introduction of the ATP Cup, but returned in 2024 and has since re-established itself as a major fixture on the WTA calendar.

Across its history, the tournament has crowned a stellar list of champions. Legends such as Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, and Maria Sharapova all lifted the trophy in Brisbane, while more recent winners have included Victoria Azarenka, Karolína Plíšková, Elina Svitolina, and Elena Rybakina. In 2025, Aryna Sabalenka added her name to the honour roll with a title run over Polina Kudermetova, underscoring Brisbane’s ongoing role as a launching pad for elite performers. The event remains a popular stop for both players and fans, serving as a high-calibre start to the new tennis season.
