WTA Structure

The WTA Tour is structured around a three-tiered system of tournaments - WTA 250, WTA 500 and WTA 1000 - each offering different levels of ranking points, prize money and competition depth. WTA 250 events form the entry level of the main tour, providing valuable opportunities for rising players to gain ranking momentum and breakthrough wins. These tournaments are held across the globe and often feature a mix of top-50 players and emerging talents. Champions earn 280 ranking points, making these events an important stepping stone for players building form or returning from injury.

Above them sit the WTA 500 tournaments, which attract stronger fields and offer 470 points to the champion. These events have become marquee stops on the WTA calendar and frequently draw many of the sport’s top names. The match intensity is noticeably higher, with top seeds often entering in the later rounds and early-round matchups featuring more ranked opponents. For many players outside the top 10, strong results at WTA 500 events are crucial in climbing into elite territory.

At the top of the regular-season hierarchy are the WTA 1000 tournaments, the premier events outside the Grand Slams and the WTA Finals. With 1000 ranking points on offer for the champion and large-scale international audiences, these tournaments - such as Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Rome - consistently attract complete top-10 fields. They feature bigger draws, longer match formats in some cases and the toughest week-to-week competition on the calendar. Performances at WTA 1000 level often define a player’s season and significantly influence year-end rankings.

The season's best eight-ranked players then qualify for the year-end championship, called the WTA Finals and currently held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The eight players are split into two groups, with the top two advancing into the semi-finals before the final crowns the year-end champion.
