My first thought when it came to this match was that it's very similar to the pair's Rome semi-final from earlier in the season. Swiatek had come through a series of crushing victories (and one three-setter) and looked in ominous form, back to her best on the dirt. But Svitolina brought her back down to earth with a three-set win before going on to win the title.

Svitolina came from a set down to topple Ekaterina Alexandrova, winning 11 of 12 games at one point, and is back to her best after a recent injury setback. The World No. 9 has an impressive 8-3 record against top 10 players this season and is the proven player in big moments right now.

It has been a frustrating season by Swiatek's lofty standards, with the former world No. 1 slipping to No. 8 in the rankings and still searching for her first WTA final of 2026.

Her best result came in Rome, where she reached the semi-finals, but Swiatek has struggled to convert deep runs into title challenges. She also endured disappointing Grand Slam campaigns, falling to Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round of Roland Garros before suffering a shock third-round defeat to Alexandra Eala at Wimbledon.

Returning to action in Toronto, Swiatek has looked much sharper. She dropped just three games combined against Sara Bejlek and Viktorija Golubic in her opening two matches before gaining revenge on Kostyuk, recovering from a set down to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 while saving nine break points across the final two sets.

She made a flying start to the year by winning the Auckland title, reaching the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and Indian Wells, and finishing runner-up in Dubai. Svitolina also thrived on clay, capturing the WTA 1000 crown in Rome before advancing to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

A hip injury suffered during the grass-court season interrupted that momentum, contributing to an opening-round exit at Wimbledon before a second-round defeat in Washington in her return to hard courts.

The 31-year-old has rediscovered her rhythm in Toronto, where she lifted the title in 2017. After battling past Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in three sets, Svitolina has been increasingly impressive, dispatching Anastasia Potapova 6-1, 6-1 and Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-4 to book her place in the quarter-finals.

Svitolina then produced a strong comeback to conquer Ekaterina Alexandrova, who was coming off an upset win over No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Svitolina won 11 of 12 games from the start of the second set and 5-1 in the decider before closing out a 3-6 6-0 6-3 victory to reach the 16th WTA 1000 semi-final of her career.
