Ben Shelton enters the ATP Montreal final as the clear favorite against Brandon Nakashima, boasting a dominant 5-0 record in their head-to-head encounters. Shelton has not dropped a set during his title defense and is tipped to win in straight sets, with at least one tiebreak likely. Nakashima, though in fine form and making his Masters 1000 final debut, struggles against Shelton and top-10 opponents. The key recommendation: Expect Shelton to defend his title, continuing his impressive run over Nakashima.

Ben Shelton vs Brandon Nakashima ATP Montreal Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Ben Shelton has a dominant 5-0 match record (11-1 in sets) over Brandon Nakashima and is tipped to successfully defend his Canada Masters title when the two Americans meet in Thursday's final in Montreal.

Lets be honest, Shelton needed a bit of help with the field in Montreal completely collapsing, but nevertheless, the American has been quite brilliant throughout his title defence, returning to the final without dropping a single set.

Shelton has raised his level considerably across his last two matches - especially in the quarter-finals against Jakub Mensik, where he struck an astonishing 18 winners to just three unforced errors. It was easily one of the best performances of his career and Shelton backed it up with a crushing 6-2 6-3 victory over Learner Tien in the semi-finals.

Nakashima meanwhile has propelled himself into a maiden Masters 1000 final, ending the run of teenage sensation Rafael Jodar in straight sets. Nakashima has now won 12 of his last 16 matches and has taken his game to the next level under the tutelage of Wayne Ferreira.

But, unfortunately for Nakashima, this has been a horror matchup. Shelton has won all five previous meetings, with four coming in straight sets. There's been at least one tiebreak in all five, which shows Nakashima isn't far away. But it also illustrates that he's consistency folding in the pressure moments.

Throw in the fact it's Nakashima's first Masters 1000 final and his poor 4-21 top 10 record and it's tough to see him overturning such a matchup problem. I'm taking Shelton outright and 1+ tiebreak as the main plays, with a little more value on the higher-ranked American in straights.
  • Shelton has won 13 of his last 15 matches in Canada
  • Shelton has a 3-0 record in finals this season
  • Shelton leads Nakashima 5-0 in the H2H & 11-1 in sets
  • There's been a total of seven tiebreaks in those five H2Hs, with 1+ in all five
  • Nakashima has a 1-3 record in ATP finals
  • Nakashima has a 4-21 record vs top 10 players

Ben Shelton Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 32-12
  • ATP Canada Record: 13-2
  • Current Ranking: No. 10
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 5 (2025)

It's been a mixed campaign for Shelton, who has shown both his tremendous upside and occasional inconsistency throughout the season.

The American has captured three ATP 500 titles in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart, but those successes have been offset by disappointing Grand Slam performances, suffering early exits at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Shelton also struggled to make an impact at Masters 1000 level before arriving in Montreal, losing his opening match in Miami, Madrid and Rome, while falling in the third round at Indian Wells. His confidence took another hit with a quarter-final defeat to Alejandro Tabilo in Washington.

However, a return to Canada has propelled Shelton back to his best tennis. The 23-year-old has powered into the final without dropping a set, defeating Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 7-5, Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-2 and Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6 to reach the quarter-finals.

From there, Shelton upped the ante, producing one of the cleanest performances of his career to demolish Jakub Mensik 6-3 6-1 before cruising past Learner Tien 6-3 6-2 in the semis.

Brandon Nakashima Form Analysis

  • 2026 ATP Record: 27-15
  • ATP Montreal Record: 8-4
  • Current Ranking: No. 31
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 29 (2025)

Nakashima has put together an impressive season and has climbed to a career-high No. 22 in the live rankings after reaching his first Masters 1000 final. Win the title and Nakashima will crack the top 15.

Although he has enjoyed success across all surfaces, including a third-round appearance at Roland Garros and a semi-final run at Queen's Club, hard courts continue to be where the American produces his best tennis.

The 24-year-old opened the year by reaching the Brisbane final and the Acapulco semi-finals before carrying that form into the North American swing with another semi-final appearance in Washington.

Nakashima has now won 12 of his last 16 matches after another outstanding week in Montreal. He began his campaign with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Daniel Altmaier before battling through consecutive three-set wins over Frenchmen Titouan Droguet and Arthur Rinderknech to reach the quarter-finals.

He then delivered one of his best performances of the season, dismantling Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-3 to book a place in the last four. Nakashima fired 11 aces and won 30 of 36 points behind his first serve as he advanced to his third semi-final in his last four tournaments.

Nakashima then backed it up with a tremendous 7-6(4) 6-4 victory over Rafael Jodar. He only managed to convert one of his 11 break points, but saved all six break chances himself, winning 81 per cent of first serve points.
