The 2026 Spring Champion Stakes brings together nine emerging three-year-old stayers over 2000m at Royal Randwick on Saturday, October 24.

First contested in 1971, the Spring Champion Stakes has produced some outstanding performers, including Savabeel, Dundeel and Sharp 'N' Smart, with this year's field featuring a mix of proven Group 1 performers and progressive staying prospects.

Flight Stakes winner Global Goal heads the betting for the 2026 Spring Champion Stakes as a $2.90 favourite with BetRight.

2026 Spring Champion Stakes Tips

2026 Spring Champion Stakes Best Bet - Global Goal

The progression from Global Goal has been ideal, with the John Sargent-trained filly building nicely towards the longer spring features after winning on debut in May. Spelled with the Princess Series in mind, she resumed with an encouraging third in the Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200m on August 22, a distance always likely to prove too sharp.

She continued improving when third in the Tea Rose Stakes over 1400m, having a month between runs following her resumption and looking just a run short against key rivals. That provided the perfect platform for her Group 1 breakthrough in the Flight Stakes, where she relished the rise to 1600m and produced the brilliance needed to reel in De Armas and Bangkok Hottie, who had enjoyed more economical runs.

The form looks right, with Bangkok Hottie flying before the Flight Stakes after completing the Furious Stakes and Tea Rose Stakes double, while De Armas subsequently headed south and proved competitive in last Saturday's Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. Global Goal was too strong for both at Randwick, and that could prove the standout form reference for this Spring Champion Stakes.

Sargent is an excellent preparer of young stayers, and while Global Goal's pedigree suggests 2000m might be towards the upper end of her preferred distance range, she gives every indication of handling the extra ground. Barrier three could also allow Dylan Gibbons to settle a little closer than in the Flight Stakes, where she drew five of seven and was ridden patiently before sweeping home.

Although the Flight Stakes was a major target, Global Goal has improved with every run this preparation and should still have something left in the tank. The rise to 2000m looks manageable, she has a favourable draw and could hold a class edge over this field, while the Spring Champion Stakes has good race for those prominent in the market in recent years. She's clearly the one to beat.
2026 Spring Champion Stakes Value Bet - Cormier

A lovely, strong colt by Maurice, Cormier has the pedigree of a genuine stayer and looks ready to appreciate the rise to 2000m. His dam Abbey Marie won the Group 1 Australasian Oaks, while the family also includes 2011 Australian Oaks winner Absolutely and Runaway, who completed a staying stakes double in the St Leger Stakes and Geelong Cup in 2018.

There were excuses for his Golden Rose performance over 1400m, a distance that proved too sharp against some of the country's leading three-year-olds. He was subsequently much stronger in the market for the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes over 1800m at Rosehill on October 10, and his fourth placing represented a significant step forward third-up.

Although under pressure a fair way from home and lacking the immediate turn-of-foot to put the race away, Cormier stuck to his task admirably, finishing less than half a length behind Proxima Dea in a tightly contested finish. It was another indication that the further he travels, the better he'll become, and the rise to 2000m around the spacious Royal Randwick circuit looks ideal for the Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich-trained colt.

Aaron Bullock returns to the saddle, renewing a successful association with Cormier and a formidable partnership with the Messara and Gavranich stable. The combination has produced around 30 winners at a strike rate exceeding 40% over the past 12 months, and the accomplished country rider thoroughly deserves an opportunity at Group 1 glory aboard a colt he knows well.

Cormier has been building towards a suitable staying assignment all preparation and now reaches his fourth run with the benefit of a strong 1800m contest behind him. His breeding, racing style and improving fitness all point towards further progression at the distance, and with an each-way price available, he looks one capable of taking a significant step forward in Saturday's Spring Champion Stakes.
